This was a really good article because if you compare the records, of Harry Catterick and Bill Shankly between seasons 1962/63 (Liverpool’s first season back in the top division) and 1971/72 (Harry’s last full season, although he did miss part of it owing to illness) they are remarkably similar. They both won 2 championships and a FA Cup as well as playing in a losing final. Shankly’s record in Europe is better but that is rather misleading as Everton could, not play in the old Fairs Cup because of the one city, one club rule. Neither did, much of note in the League Cup.
Also, it is probably safe to say that Catterick was better at promoting local talent into the first team, while Shankly had the edge in picking up players from lower divisions. Harry was, in my opinion better at rebuilding the squad. Ten of the Liverpool 1965 cup winning team played at some point in the 1968/69 season, but only five of the Everton 1966 side appeared in that season. Shankly, of course, only started the rebuilding after the Watford debacle.
