In Faith of Our Families pp 55ff some great quotes.

The ground was full and gates were shut well before ko.

Hickson: They said they tarmacked over everywhere - literally poured hot sticky tar over the walls - to stop people getting in, but it didn't work. The fans climbed over everything to get in.

Fr. John Ashton: They had tried tarmacking the walls earlier to stop people getting in.I climbed a wooden post to get over the wall and there were several priests with me, all in collars, because we didn't get rid of the collar in those days; we wore it to go to the match. We were all giving each other a leg up outside of Oldham's ground. :) ...we had Davey Hickson play that day as centre forward and he would go through defence lines as if they were not there

That tar my late father told me that the Everton fans went to all the newsagents shops nearby & bought out most of the newspapers to place over the runny tar, so they could then climb the walls without getting it on their clothes climbing over the walls - plus at half time at 4-0 if Oldham had not come out kicking lumps out of us - we would have scored the six goals to win the title - we came close on two occasions in that 2nd half , but the Oldham side held out sadly , but promotion was gained ;)
