The Victorian landowners sold up, the Councils took over most head gardeners got jobs taking on most of the staff way back -when the councils had funds to keep the uptake of the Estates or large parks areas - Liverpool parks department was the 2nd best in the UK in the 1960s/70s - I was fortunate to work under two of their best growers who left them to work in Court Hey Park Huyton UDC which was previously owned by Bibby's who had a wide range of Private Gardeners - Huyton UDC were given the land many acres a nursery on a peanut rent lease which sadly expired in the early 1990s - hence that parks demise as Knowsley MBC could not afford the rent ...…close on 30 men in that pic, you walk around that estate today and see nobody attending the grounds.
