The Tower didn’t burn down, it was demolished after the First World War because vital maintenance, such as round the clock painting to protect against the constant, damp sea air, had not been carried out while workers were away in the trenches. The building at the foot of the tower finally burned down in 1969.
So why, oh why, did they pull it down...? Yes, of course, I know it was burned to the ground - but why not rebuild it...?
