On This Day;

It got me thinking about Jordan Pickford. Where does he stand in the current scheme of international goalkeepers? I would suggest, that whilst he unfavourably compares to the likes of Southall, and whilst he undoubtedly has flaws, if being world class sits a goalkeeper in a select group, would he not be in it? (Admittedly not sure in the strength of general goalkeeping in general) but I know just in respect of the PL, not sure I’d take many over him.

Southall was lightyears ahead of Jordan mate
Pickford is good, Big nev was out of this world

No I understand that mate but you can only be categorised as world class compared to current players…..I’m not talking about comparing him with Southall, there’s obviously no comparison, just with his peers.

If someone is determined to be world class e.g. in an elite group of players worldwide, my ponderings were whether he could be categorised as such with the current crop of keepers.

….the term ‘world class’ is too often used and I have a simple benchmark. A world class player walks into virtually any team on the planet.

Pickford is decent but he doesn’t even walk into every team in this league.

I’ve seen others that the term could apply to at the time they played for us; the young Rooney, Lineker and Kanchelskis, but none of them were here long enough for me to capture them.

He has kept more cleansheets in major tournament matches than any other English goalkeeper. He has also saved more penalties than any other English goalkeeper.
