2024/25 Orel Mangala

He's a proper midfielder who can keep the ball, pass it forwards or sideways to advantage, and is not easily outstrengthed or hurried/badgered into poor decisions.

Watching Sean Dyche scream "hit it to Dom" from the sidelines as DCL runs up the channel for the umpteenth time only for it to skid over the touchline, or he flicks on a goal kick or centre half hoof with no support to the opposition goalkeeper or center half so we instantly lose possession must be infuriating for him to watch.

The air of resignation from Mangala as Pickford waves him away as he comes deep for the ball and our dearly beloved Barking T-Rex bypasses midfield again at Dyche's behest, or Doucoure shins the ball to Young who hacks it up to Dom down the touchline for the twelfth time for no tangible result is hard to watch without feeling like he represents all of us.

Doomed to watch dire long ball football which plays directly into the oppositions hands.

Until we have more players like him who are better on the ball, and while we still have a manager who is playing stone-age football, I fear Mangala will be under-utilised and under-valued.

In a team which favours route one, counter-attacking football with little (to no) possession, and is based on graft, physicality, desire, stamina, sheer willpower and hit and hope set pieces over skills, precision, class, science, flair and fluidity, the Mangala's of this world are often shunned for the all pressing try-hard qualities of a Doucoure or Harrison.

Desperation, over quality. It's very hard to control a game when you carry so many technically challenging players.

Not much point getting technically gifted players when Dyche is managing them.

re DCL: you forgot to mention offsides

Nice to have a midfielder who can hang onto a ball for once.
Yeah, wasn’t sure about this signing but he’s been quietly impressive the last couple games. Calm on the ball and at retaining possession seems to be his big quality. Could be a good player for us. Was hoping Garner would really kick on this season but seems behind Mangala, Gana and even Doucs in that midfield pairing.

I hope they compliment each other well, Gana can just attack the ball carrier while Mangala shields the back 4 and controls it in possession. Would be interesting to see them in a 3 man midfield

That's not really what he does though. Doucoure has been doing that more the past two matches.
