I read somewhere during the week that Niasse was told that he would need 16 individual training sessions before being able to play. I think it is 10 or 11 weeks since he last played. Love a good conspiracy theory myself but could this be that rarest of commodities -common sense?

Don't think do. Martinez said he thought that Niasse would need about 60 (not 16) sessions to get totally up to speed with the PL, but that he was including the matches against Stoke, West Brom and Bournemouth in those sessions. So, he was clearly planning to use him today imo.
