If he's medical reports are true, we'd be able to get insurance on him - so essentially, he'd be on pay as you play from our point of view (from his point of view, he'd just get the money).

Saha was only an issue because nobody would insure him.

Good points that I hadn't considered.

Also, I'm slightly surprised he'd come to us rather than Hull/Stoke. Obviously we are the biggest team that would come in for him, but that's just it - he won't play every game for us, and that's big for Capello. Signing for us is essentially giving up on the world cup, and I wouldn't expect him to do that.

He wouldnt pick a player at Hull or Stoke, no chance.

He came to us and banged 7 goals in, he'd get a call up.

He called up (though didn't play) Jimmy Bullard of...Hull City. He picked Mancienne who'd only played at Wolves. He picked Beckham of the LA Galaxy. He picked Downing of Borough - you might think Borough are a bigger club than Hull, but Capello is unlikely to see the difference.

Basically he picks players who are playing well for their clubs, and doesn't pick players who are sat on the bench

It wasn't such a big issue when he called up Gary Neville

That's true, but people made a fuss about it because it was the exception to the rule. Most other players (including Owen) didn't get that luxery from him.

Remember that even when Owen was fit, Capello didn't pick him. Owen clearly has to actively change Capello's mind, and he won't do that making the occasional sub appearance.

I agree that if he's boss and knocks in 10 goals he'll get in the squad, but do you see that happening at Everton? We don't create many chances at the best of times, and he'll struggle to get on the pitch. At this stage of his career, he isn't the player Yakubu is; it's debatable whether he's the player Saha is, and he might not even be the goalscorer that Cahill is.

Bullard was a shock but he was playing well for Fulham, who were playing well at the time. Wont be seen or heard since.

Beckham is a glamour player now - and wouldnt be getting a call up if he was playing for LA which is why he went to Ac Milan..and played well.

Mancienne, again, a joke call up because he went back to Chelsea and sat on the bench. Was chosen over Jags and picked soley on being at Chelsea. Has been shocking in the Under 21's Euro championships.

Downing is a natural left footed winger and only got a chance because Joe Cole was injured all season, and Ashley Young isnt international class at the moment.

Dave Kitson at one point was the highest scoring English goal scorer when he was at Reading during a season...never got a call up. Kevin Davies this season was too, never got a call up.

The whole "you play well, you get a call up" works for Capello when it suits him. Its still big club name players that will be always looked at first before anyone else..unless they're short of numbers.

You could be right, but I think Capello prefers players with CL experience than a player who has never played European football. The gulf between CL and International football is less than EPL and international level. Mancienne has been a vital part of the U21`s long unbeaten run playing over 80% of the games. He hasnt been great at the championships, but nor has Ahbohnlahor, but does this mean he is no good. Unfortunately the only place you get CL football is in the top 4.
