This is right. Maldini waltzed around in a harlem globetrotter type team. I think it was Walters autobiography or maybe archie knox that wrote how ferguson was offered him at United but laughed at the prospect.
This is pretty silly. A bunch of 30 and 40 something fan boys straining at the memory of remembering a good looking Italian swan around on a sun basted pitch without an opposition player to challenge or harass him. Of course he looked good. He was good. My point was then and is now its ludicrous to compare him to either of the eras referenced in that thread.
The mid 80s and Everton were the best in the world. Gary Stevens and the likes of mad Pat not only had to actually defend but to cover driving runs from teams set up to challenge us in what was the most competitive league on the planet. And Gary and Pat etc did it. Mastered it. Maldini was no better than either and probably worse but I'm biased so on reflection I'll call it equal.
Where there is no doubt a blue was superior to Maldini was Kevin Ratcliffe - probably the best defender we've ever seen. Different eras but Rats had it all.
More recently Baines clearly had more skill than the aforementioned Italian. Lacking in pace Leighton glided into pockets of space others could only dream of. And he could defend when needed. Plus he had an individuality about him that you didn't get with Filippo Berio man.
Where this comes about is fanboys now reflecting on their spreading girth and harking back to the halcyon days in the 90s when they could touch their toes whilst flexing to Football Italia. Just because James Richardson told you in hushed tones than Maldini was a God doesn't make it true.
The lad was good. Very decent even. But not really special.
Google Dani Behr for context and lay off the biscuits.
I've come out with more sense at the Paradox on a Saturday night after 10 bottles of becks and 5 mitzi's.
I can only assume this is parody.
The greatest defender ever.
Tune in tomorrow when Charlie explains to us all how Sharp was better than Van Basten and how Gullit wasn't a patch on Vinny Samways.
Growing up, Rats was my hero, but Maldini and Baresi were two of the best defenders I’ve ever seen play the game. No question about it. Maldini was a beautiful player to watch.
That's a lot of names that go next to one constant. Maybe he helped them.
If a John Terry hussle and bustle, last ditch tackle type is your ideal defender, then Maldini is not your man.Without the slightest context of opposition this comment makes no sense.
Not at all. Sharp was brilliantly effective but clearly had some limitations. Samways was nothing in my eyes. That doesnt take anything away from some of our players being truly world class and the best in their positions (southall, Rats to name but two)
Thats it. Beauty. You've been lulled and lubed.
Oh, thanks for pointing that out to me, appreciate that. I’ll henceforth change my view.Without the slightest context of opposition this comment makes no sense.

Hi Charlie, still awaiting any evidence on your claim below:
So, after not so much digging this is what Alex Ferguson wrote about Paolo Maldini:
“Maldini was an outstanding player. I loved him. I approached his father once, and the look he gave me I knew never to go back to him," said Ferguson.
“I watched Milan in their quarter-final, second leg against Bayern Munich and Maldini went through the entire 90 minutes without tackling. That is an art and he is the master of it. He is a great player. You can’t dismiss the sort of experience he has.“
Other qoutes
Ronald Koeman
“There’s never been a better left-back in the game’s history. Two-footed, and at his peak, brilliant going forward.
“The night Milan annihilated Barcelona in the 1994 Champions League Final, he played centre-half, as Franco Baresi and Alessandro Costacurta were both suspended, and looked like he’d played there all his life.”
Ronaldo
“Paolo Maldini is the best I’ve played against.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
“Maldini was the best and toughest defender I ever faced. He had everything: he was a complete defender, who was strong, intelligent, and an excellent man-marker.”
But @Charlie Sweet watched Channel 4 once in the 90’s and declared him crap
