Ray Wilson was just getting past his best when he joined us, but better left back than the pair of them - His England internationals prove that ......back then, contract wise it was hard to leave a 2nd division club like Huddlesfield where he started as a left-winger converted into a world-class left back ....

He regretted signing a long deal with them before joining us as a great left back defensively brilliant & great at overlapping too .... he was an immaculate left back ..... Baines the next best ......

…my word, can’t believe the vote. As good as Baines was and I’m a huge fan of his, only Ray Wilson is above PVDH in the Everton LBs I’ve seen.

VdH was a Rolls Royce of a footballer, sadly the ‘Psycho’ tag diminishes his ability. He rarely had to get out of 2nd gear in a foot race, superbly effective as a right-footed LB. I never saw him as a ‘dirty’ player because he didn’t have to be dirty.

One amazing and often overlook achievement was his part in our ‘87 title win. Because of injuries he played CB for a large part of that season (Paul Power covering at LB) and he was magnificent, actually scoring the goal that sealed the title at Norwich.

Loved watching Baines, but VdH without a doubt was a fantastic player who’s immensely underrated. Think Rolls Royce and not Psycho and your closer to the descriptor.

Paddy Van for me although I actually think technically Bainsey was the better footballer!!Pat had the advantage of course of playing in a far better side than Bainsey which distorts the argument slightly, Bainsey offered us much more going forward although Pat was no mug with the ball using his right peg, better defender too, could slot on as centre back when called upon, can only ever recall the lad Carr at forest skinning him, think pat Nevin did him once too for Chelsea and yes maybe it's a sentimental vote for me as I love the bones of that mid 1980s side💙

I thought VdH was more a natural centre half than anything else. He was great at LB in that 80s side but as you say played in the middle a lot and I'm sure he could cover at RB as well. He was never an attacking full back like Baines, or Power even.

For the current team I'd have Baines back. If only we could have Gary Stevens at RB as well.

Tough call. Depends on the squad that's around them. Wouldn't need Baines for free kicks if Sheedy was there, so PVDH would make a tougher defence. Without Sheedy and if the defence was solid anyway I'd go for Baines for his creativity.

Both great players, but Leighton just.. And I loved PsychoPat, simple reason Pat would have spent most of his time suspended in today's Football arena. very underrated players both of them.

…..he was some defender but I remember Lineker when he came in scoring plenty of headers and highlighting the service he got from both full-backs as well as Steven and Sheedy.
