They're a little pointless. They don't stop you contracting anything but may help prevent you passing something on. However if you feel you have something enough to warrant masking outside you shouldn't be going outside.

Thats the key point, the evidence is equivocal but its about possibly protecting others. On the face of it harmless. I agree with an earlier post about people in public places acting like they are now invincible. Its a precaution not a guarantee.
 


I wear one when in public and in an enclosed space i.e. supermarket.

I don't get the opposition to their use in some quarters.

Clearly they cannot provide full protection but as I see it, masks are just another brick in the wall as part of an overall defence and protection strategy against the virus, to be used in tandem with all other measures like hand-washing and social distancing. It's clear they have at least some role to play in certain circumstances.

The issue I guess is those who think wearing a mask absolves them from all other responsibilities, but from observation, people who wear them are likely to be more observant of requirements and not less.
