Don’t care how much of a popular guy he is, or how much he leads by example in training. The captain of our club has just seen some idiot try to break Leighton Baines’ leg in the 89th minute of a friendly and calmly, meekly complained to the ref once the ball had gone out of play.
No matter what you think of them as people, John Terry, Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard (!), even Mark fcking Noble would be in there defending their player the second it happened. While they (except Noble) are obviously in a different class when it comes to playing ability, that’s not the discussion.
I genuinely believe that having this mute as captain over Seamus Coleman will hold us back going forward.
Edit: This is all irrespective of his “defending” tonight, by the way.

Not good, but if he doesn’t want to jump then the club need to push him. Terry at Chelsea, Slippy at the RS, Casillas at Madrid... bigger players than phil Jagielka have been cast out because they couldn’t cut it any more. Of course this is Everton retirement community so he gets to stay.
He should be absolutely mortified about that 3rd goal tonight. If he isn't, time to retire.

Depressingly, he's probably second best after Holgate, despite the fact he's nowhere near good enough, and hasn't been since Martinez's last season at least.
I wouldn’t call him better than anyone else really, we have Holgate and then a load of shitters that are all at the same level, there’s not even a sliding scale. We have ourselves to blame for not sorting this position last summer when it was a priority.
