Transfer Rumour Philippe Coutinho

Genuinely stumped on this. I dont know if it could be great or an expensive mistake. Clearly a cut above some of our plodders.

For me, although I think he's a good player, I don't know how you can play Coutinho and James in the same team and not be incredibly lightweight in midfield. Adding Gomes to that mix would be horrifying.

It'd pretty much require Allan and Doucoure being fit permanently.

So yeah, like you I'd have him in, but there's so many more priorities in terms of balance, and his cost would be huge.

Im not convinced we are in for him at all.

Maybe this is why we want another centre back...play 4 centre backs, Digne and 3 no10 Dom n Rich

Yeah I said the same yesterday. I think we'd have to sign at least 2 - maybe even 3 - more central midfielders to be able to do it. You'd have to make sure you always had 3 in there who could run all day and do the graft. Currently we only have 2 on the books, and with Allan and Doucoure's injury/suspension records you'd be pushing your luck even with 4. In many ways i'd love to see it but it just doesn't feel like it would work at the moment.

i wonder if the rumours are just a cheeky distraction, or to drive up the price, or to distract us from some other players going? Makes no sense at all

But we have to look beyond the first 11. Rodriguez wont play a full season. So the question is could they both play crucial roles throughout the season.
There are other positions. But bit by bit if you start adding quality to the squad for me thats what its all about. Its just our recruitment has left so many holes in positions needing more of a priority that it could be just wrong time. Who knows. But its a tempted to have a nibble thats for sure.

Never happen due to the wages he's on, more importantly I don't think he'd ever come to us out of sheer embarrassment for leaving Liverpool to "win things" then Liverpool go on to win the CL and league in successive seasons why he's been shipped out on loan.

Bit of a tampon these days but he is absolutely quality let's not pretend otherwise.

I mean he's won 8 trophies since he's left Liverpool including 3 leauge titles and a champions leauge. Its not like he'd be coming back to the league with his tail between his legs like Owen did.

I agree but if you have James/Coutinho in your side you start them IMO. They're too good not to, and they'd be too annoyed not to.

If you rotate them, and spend the money required to bring Coutinho in, you'd be abandoning other positions where we're currently rotating a finished Seamus Coleman and a centre-half in Holgate for example. You'd also be hoping beyond hope the runners we have in midfield, Allan/Doucoure, stay fit, or Gbamin somehow recovers and is decent, which is a forlorn hope.

It just doesn't make sense to me. We have so many other areas of the side we need to improve. Unless we're binning Sigurdsson for some sort of fee and getting his wages off the books, so it's only a comparatively marginal cost increase to bring in Coutinho.

But as others have said, I don't think this has any substance.

He's won trophies but he's not really been in the team that won trophies ( or like a starter )

I think the trophies would have meant more personally for him if he won them with Liverpool, given he was a starter and one of their best players l.

Going to Munich and winning the champions League playing the odd minutes isn't the same IMO

Most of that i wouldnt dispute.
The part in bold. Ancelotti has had that for 20 years with squads. I wouldnt worry about that. He's benched rodriguez this season. Ancelotti can handle that in his sleep.

Depends how Carlo wants to play long term though. If he wants to play his Milan Christmas tree formation thing then i can see this tbh, Coutinho, James in behind DCL and behind them a midfield 3 of Allan, Doucoure, and someone like that Sarr who would all be breaking the play up and recycling the ball back forward. My only concerns with it would be that a) It's either Richarlison or DCL upfront and overall i think DCL would score more, and b) that it would require a certain sustained level of fitness from the players which is not our strongest point.

What Coutinho and players of his ilk do give us is the ability to work the ball in tight spaces. A lot of the way that Liverpool beat the press with him in the side was give him the ball, let him invite pressure then move the ball on to a player who's marker had come to press Coutinho. Similar to how James plays, that's how he creates space for other players. Its also something that we have been pretty awful at for a long time. We are awful when pressed, having no out-balls to give or ability to get behind teams. Whether Coutinho is the right person, I don't know as I've not seen anything of him since he left English football, but I can certainly see the benefits of having somebody who can bring what he brought to Liverpool.
