Used to leak fuel like anythingSorry to nerd out but this thread is right up my street, this aircraft was originally known as the A-12 Oxcart.
Due to the extreme temperatures it endured due to the altitude and velocity it flew at its skin was Titanium.
Given the thing was designed in the 60's during the Cold War the Americans had to set up a blag company to import the required materials from Russia.
The Russians used Satellites when the Americans had a model of it in Area 51, they upended a model on the airfield to test its imperviousness to RADAR, basically a SR-71 with a pole up its arse. They would take it down when they knew Ruski sats were passing overhead however it left an obvious heat signature on the ground where it had been covering the ground. So the Russians had a pefect outline of the aircraft but nothing beyond.
