As you all know, Nuno is gorgeous and I'll love him forever.
I would love to see him stay on for another year but realistically he is only going to be cover if Bainsy gets injured, heaven forbid.

While Jags is out and let's face it, we'll be lucky to see him play this side of Christmas, we don't have the luxury of allowing Lescott to cover at left back. In addition, the likes of Yobo will be off for some time playing in the African Cup thing so unless DM plans to buy in some centre backs and a new LB, we're not blessed with lots of cover.
If we have a decent cup run, Carling and Europa, then we will need to have some sort of rotation too. He has plenty of experience and DM has been quoted as saying he's the best professional he has ever managed, so that must mean something.

Anyway, my heart and my head are in agreement, keep in for 12 months on a reduced salary. He's out of contract anyway so we won't get a bean for him towards Moutinhio or anyone else for that matter.

Taken from The Times....

Valente looks to exit

Nuno Valente has said that he will leave Everton this summer, but the defender hopes to play one more season before he retires. The 34-year-old has not played since August because of a knee problem. “The coaches and the manager have always supported me, but I understand that they would be doubtful about renewing my contract,” he said.

Ordinarily I'd agree with that, but I guess Moyes and his staff know the medical condition of the guy and will therefore know the likelyhood of him staying fit to provide that cover.

I agree though that we do need cover for defence. Barnett has been mentioned from the reserve team but I don't know how good he is or whether he's ready to provide that cover.

have we not had the discussion about squad size like a million times??

Yes.

But i don't think for a second it should be a case of let Valente go and don't replace him.

Its a case of keep him for what he is (experienced but succeptable to injuries) as lb cover or replace him.

And if we replace him and get a bit of money for him good if not surely we have another lb somewhere at the club who can step in if needed, if not we can get one in from lower leagues who has potential and youth on his side.

We could even use Lescott as lb cover and get another cb in.

Whatever happens our bodycount has to stay the same or increase.

Hasn't Neville played lb at times in his career?

No he is still here but Hull are interested.

As for Nuno, helped us out when needed but time to move on. AS far as cover is concerned for the CBs what about Rodwell??

Think we should let him go, he's injured more often than not these days, lets get what we can for him, and see whats out there to replace. I have faith in Moyes to do whats right for Everton.

I'd give him another year if the staff felt he was capable of playing a lot of games next season, he's an excellent professional with loads of experience & so is useful to have around the squad, especially with a squad of our size. We need to increase the squad size dramatically next season, releasing players who are capable of coming into the team & doing a job will not help to get 1
