Can anyone advise me?

I was spotted driving our car last week with no insurance. The cops saw me and I knew they had, but I was very close to home so drove it there and parked up on the driveway. Ineviteably, 2 mins later, knock, knock and I'm stuffed!!!

The thing is, they've reported me for summons AND compounded the car from the driveway, even though its registered in my hubby's name. Tbh, I felt at the time that perhaps they couldn't take it but what can you do? But then I spoke to a pc who was very surprised at it being taken from the driveway, although he wasn't willing to comment further (obv).

Its £105 for the compound fine and then £12 a day, plus we've got to produce in Huyton and the cars stored in Bootle (open only 9am - 4pm, fella reckons "just tell ye fella he'll have to take time off work"" - tit), so we'r going to pick it up tomorrow, but just wondered if any of you had any ideas on whether compounding from the drive was legit?

Ps. This is a one-off, I'm not a scally!!

if you are in the wrong, do whatever you can to not have a police light cast upon that wrong.

whats a few quid compared to further police action?

Any charges must be made against you unless they say your husband allowed you to drive the vehicle. All he has to say is that you drove it without his permission but he doesn't wish to press charges. The Police can then find themselves in deep [Poor language removed] as they have impounded a vehicle by removing it from private property with out cause or reason, compensation may fall due if a formal complaint is made to the Police Complaints Committee.

If your hubby has accepted that he let you drive it then that may be another matter. In such circumstances ask Citizens Advice(y)

"MrsStapo" started the same thread on bk & as you know sometimes reponses there can be blunt & to the point. people don't seem to consider it responsible when it's not just one persons life at risk, others immediately related it to the enormous insurance charges they have to meet to have a car on the road. let's just say the general reponse was lacking in sympathy.

They are fair points but I gave my advice on the assurance that she'd been a one off idiot, which she most certainly was(y)

quite understandable, monty. however, "MrsStapo" claimed that her bank had mistakenly stopped a direct debit in january & they hadn't realised, nonetheless she originally posted "I was spotted driving our car last week with no insurance. The cops saw me and I knew they had..." - therefore she was fully aware that she was driving an uninsured vehicle.

Dennis, cheers for the helpful remarks and interesting psychological insight into my comments posted to those coming out with precious drivel like yourself, very commendable!!

For the record, AS I'VE ALREADY STATED, I didn't know I had no insurance, i've got 4 kids I drive round and would never in a million years knowingly put them - or anyone else - in danger, so the comment of 'I knew the police had seen me' was meant to show that I knew I'd done something wrong, but didn't know what. Obviously, with them not stopping me on the road, I thought that the funny look they'd given me was in my imagination.

I really didn't post the thread to hear higher than mighty views on reckless and irresponsible uninsured drivers, it was merely to see what anyone thought of the police taking the car. Rest assured, it was a genuine mistake that I've got no problem in dealing with. Nice to know you can be relied on for sensible input though, well done.

stapo, i think you're reading a bit too much into my posts if you see them as offering a "psychological insight". tbh, your plea of innocence might have rung true if made at the time, but looks a bit revisionist in the morining light. however, i'm certainly not going to call you a liar. at the end of the day you know the truth of it & you don't have to answer to some anonymous poster on a forum. i'm sorry if my views have offended you, particularly in the light of your latest post, but as you may be able to tell it's an issue that irks me & many others somewhat. however, at the end of the day it is your responsibility to arrange adequate insurance & you didn't have it, so whilst sympathy for your plight is understandable, i do think there should be a limit to your sense of self-righteous indignation.
