As for the retort, humans have been crappy to each other for a whole long time. And the notion that we are suddenly more accepting was just a temporary facade that is now showing with this current climate.

I fear you might be right...I remember a golden period of good-natured hope & acceptance between the mid-90's and early-00's...we were aware. Who knows, maybe we'll meet it again some day. Just need to retune ourselves with each other...
