We removed them on a temporary basis to see how it would pan out.
Post count is a feature that is never questioned on a forum. Removing it from view took some effort, there is no feature to simply turn it off so clearly, taking the effort to remove it was done with some thought that it would benefit the forum. One reason being some newer members being actually intimidated by members with a vast post count. As silly as it may sound, it's actually true. It is hoped removing it from open view will encourage a more level playing field and with a bit of luck, encourage more of the 95% of our readers who never actually post.
Though the decision is by no means definite. I'm open ears to suggestions as to why a post count is required - other than for allowing the tedious, spam like "WOW I've reached 2,000 posts".
As a compromise, I could try and work out a way for a members to view their own post count.
