As discussed here, we've today started trialling a new post rate system.

Previously members could 'Like' a post. Now, they can 'Like' or 'Dislike' ('KOF') a post. Those who have been posting for a while will remember it being similar to the rep system, but without the ability to comment.

The developers reckon it;

  • Increases daily posts.
  • Improves signal to noise ratio; less short/unnecessary posts
  • Improves quality of posts (posters want to avoid negative ratings)
  • Makes lurkers useful for something and gives them a means of interaction
And, it can help self moderate - there's a setting that allows 'x' amount of dislikes to place a post in a moderation queue.

We'll be tweaking the system over the next week or two to see if it can work. Be mindful that if we notice people taking the piss with it (targeting members etc) then we'll revoke access and it'll be a mark in the against category for the feature...

I think they've worked

Yea, I agree.

I preferred the old rep ( with comments ), but it was the comments which got abused so that was never likely to come back.

Hopefully Danny'll persevere with it, and, rather than binning it, just stops anyone who abuses it using it. I did this with a few people ( most notably @orly* ) with old rep and it was an ace punishment.

I do have the suspicion that D/D are just teasing Chico by giving us rep for a couple of weeks and they'll take it away purely to see him fume.

*If Orly doesn't koff this post then he's going soft in his middle age.

I had thought of this as it's exactly what he would do. I'm hoping to have cunning revenge by dragging him to a local beach this summer (sort it lid) and making him walk for 4 miles on sand, he hates walking on sand. A moan every metre.

I don't really think it's had much of an impact tbh. To the people who are kind of engaged with it (me, Don, wizard, the clique lads) it probably seems like a bigger deal than it actually is. But there's hundreds of other posters in the Everton forum who don't know or give an eff about it, happily chatting Everton while being completely oblivious to the one or two battleground threads that pop up. We're not that important like

Koff lad.

If folk wanna stress over numbers on t'interwebz they deserve at least a modicum of misery.

It's not a happy life. I'd swerve it, but what do I know?

Blindfold him, make sure he goes barefoot and walk him down from Formby to Ainsdale and let him take his chances with the jellyfish.

That'll learn him

It allows people to highlight bellendary

It becomes a nonsense when beauts start picking on posters with it as a collective

*bellendery ( I think ).

So, approaching week 1;
  • 3:1 Positive vs Negative Post Ratings Ratio.
  • 7 members have contacted me via email/private message to feedback - all prompted by negativity of the system. Six of the seven have been here for years and not who I'd privately consider 'cry arses'. Some really useful feedback which I appreciated.
  • Unfortunately, a handful of members have been idiots with it. That said, it is a small minority who have abused the system and a system like this allows us to very easily see aggravators. If a member wants to go back and negative rate 10/15 posts from another member in the name of "BANTZ", or they want to sign up a multi to do likewise - then we should embrace how easy it is to bin this prick.
  • Usage. By far and away the biggest negative so far is the extra resource per page load it's using. It's currently stealing too much resource per page load, more than it promised.
So, week 2 of a 2 week trial from tomorrow before considering any third sees the below;
  • Any member who is seen to be 'hounding' another member, will either have a message sent to them, have their post ratings feature removed from their account or account suspended. To the discretion of the moderator.
  • New members can no longer use the feature until they're past moderation (first 5 posts approved).
After week 2, we run a poll proposing whether there's a week 3 trial of post ratings.

Name and shame the 'cry arse one' so we can historically neg their posts...

...never mind.

Seriously though, let's not have a handful of over enthusiastic posters ruin it for everyone. Part of this is likely due to the fear of losing it again - therefore going overboard with it while it's still here.

Is this something that the developer can address?
