Premier League TV deal

Player Valuation: £35m
So, new deal agreed by the premier league. The basic headlines;

  • Changes start from 25/26 season
  • Increase in the number of televised games per season from 200 to 270
  • All 10 final day games to be televised
  • The Saturday afternoon 3pm blackout will remain in place but every 2pm Sunday kick-off will be televised.
  • The tender process will be completed by the end of the year.

I think the upshot of it is that if your team plays in Europe and therefore your game is moved to Sunday, it will always be shown on TV. It will be interesting to see who bids there are actually less packages, but more games per package.

At the moment there are 7 packages, but in the new deal there are only 5 packages, but more games per package. It would be great to see someone else try and wrestle it away from Sky or TNT. I think in the past no one has been able to buy all the games for one single broadcaster.

Not selling it to a single broadcaster just means you pay for more subscriptions.
Amazon would be a strong bet, have toyed with it the last few seasons, would be a huge scoop for them and nail the coffin for others.
I’m close to getting rid of sky, don’t watch anything g any more - film
Are crap and sports worthless

Sky, TNT, Amazon and DAZN will be the main companies vying for rights but I wouldn't be surprised to see Paramount, Disney Plus and maybe even Netflix looking to get involved.

Have a feeling there is legislation in place to stop such a monopoly.

The PL needs to just bring out their own streaming service for a monthly subscription.... they'd probably make more money with that service than the current system.
YOu are probably right but once it's in house, the cross-channel promotions, and the hype machine is in danger of fading.

Sky will have not interest at all in drumming up the premier league if it's not got the right. It will not get a mention on SSN.

I don't really buy into the hype these days I guess I did when I was a younger man... the only football I watch now is Everton and Ireland (how bleak is that).. I have sky sports but only because it was offered at half price until February.. I'd rather pay the PL €50 a month so I could watch every Everton game and I would punt sky sports.

I sort of agree, I think if the premier league had its own streaming service, they would have to do something else to promote it. Possibly by making some content free and then the live matches are paid for, it could work but it would take a level of organization im not sure the premier league have.

I just hope from a fans perspective its not split across too many different providers. Hopefully it will just be 2, so someone like Sky would get 3 packages and TNT get the other 2. At least that way you get all premier league and Champions League, Europa League and Uefa Conference league on 2 providers.

Worst case would be if its across 5 different providers and then if you want it all its about £150 a month. I think if that happened it would push more people onto the dodgy boxes.

Amazon gets a bit of a free pass imo coz so many people have Prime so no extra subscription needed to watch their matches. I can't see DAZN staying out of the bidding with the length of this deal tbh, they'd have to wait a long time to get UK rights if they don't get it this time.

Doubt any terrestrial channel could afford the money that will be asked to get a live game package.
Its being reported that the smallest package of 42 games will go for £300m a year!
The BBC spend around £1.8bn a year, so spending £300m on football (on top of MOTD and FA cup, etc) is probably not going to go down well with license fee payers.
The question is, would channel 4 or ITV think that it offers value for money? Both have seen an overall drop in advertising revenues in recent years
Channel 4 posted revenue of £1.4bn last year and ITV revenues are far higher £4.3bn last year so could invest £300m in premier league football, if they thought they would get that back in advertising.
