Premier League TV deal

I don't really buy into the hype these days I guess I did when I was a younger man... the only football I watch now is Everton and Ireland (how bleak is that).. I have sky sports but only because it was offered at half price until February.. I'd rather pay the PL €50 a month so I could watch every Everton game and I would punt sky sports.
The fear is that once the pl get paid, then clubs demand a share of their market share. Then Man Utd, RS and possibly Man City and chelae and arsenal use their worldwide fans to increase their income beyond the rest of the league

So, new deal agreed by the premier league. The basic headlines;

  • Changes start from 25/26 season
  • Increase in the number of televised games per season from 200 to 270
  • All 10 final day games to be televised
  • The Saturday afternoon 3pm blackout will remain in place but every 2pm Sunday kick-off will be televised.
  • The tender process will be completed by the end of the year.

I think the upshot of it is that if your team plays in Europe and therefore your game is moved to Sunday, it will always be shown on TV. It will be interesting to see who bids there are actually less packages, but more games per package.

At the moment there are 7 packages, but in the new deal there are only 5 packages, but more games per package. It would be great to see someone else try and wrestle it away from Sky or TNT. I think in the past no one has been able to buy all the games for one single broadcaster.
So all the teams playing in Europe get the Sunday games televised, thus promoting their brand and presumably getting more tv cash?

Don't people see how this destroys competition in the long term?

Disgrace. Obviously the big clubs keep moaning about money.

How would they know.. you sell it as a package every PL game not team by team.

Its being reported that the smallest package of 42 games will go for £300m a year!
The BBC spend around £1.8bn a year, so spending £300m on football (on top of MOTD and FA cup, etc) is probably not going to go down well with license fee payers.
The question is, would channel 4 or ITV think that it offers value for money? Both have seen an overall drop in advertising revenues in recent years
Channel 4 posted revenue of £1.4bn last year and ITV revenues are far higher £4.3bn last year so could invest £300m in premier league football, if they thought they would get that back in advertising.

Bin off overpaid 'stars' for one and the BBC would soon free up a lot of that 300 million.

If Lineker was on 120k a year, he'd be better off than 99% of the population. There'd be a queue of knowledgeable presenters at that money. Same with many other on screen talent.

The Technology has existed for a long time, i lived in Australia and NZ in the late noughties and you paid your Sub to Fox Sports another Murdoch entity and you could pick what clubs match you wanted to watch i.e. Everton every week.

I can understand not having the club specific option rolled out at 3:00 pm Sat in the UK with the lower leagues - but why they haven't rolled it out to the likes of Ireland is bizarre and im sure elsewhere, theyd coin it in.

so the deal for domestic rights has been announced couple of main points;

  • Games will only be on SkySports and TNT (no more Amazon games)
  • Sky will show 215 games per season
  • TNT will show 52 games
  • Sky will broadcast all 10 games on the final day of the season
  • This starts from 25/26 season

Successful teams get more money ensuring they remain successful and gain further armchair supporters snd so sell more games on TV and more favourable refereeing/var decisions to ensure they remain a sofa-selling brand.

Big business entertainment, no longer sport.

It would be great to see only the BBC bid and the cash that has ruined our sport go away along with the wideboy owners.
