Obama, you beauty. Invest in Everton FC. nuff said.

Oh yeah. Nice one lad.

Thumbs up from me

Alas Bruce, you'll never see the "proof" that you're looking for.

Congrats to Obama.

That said, I'm looking forward to my taxes going higher to pay for all of his liberal programs as he'd like to "spread the wealth."

Fortunately, the Dems don't look like they'll get the 60 seats needed in the Senate to completely ram their agenda down our throats so all is not lost. (y)

I must say I'm mildly scared by the fervour that is greeting his appointment. I know he's the first black president and all that, but we're in 2008 now, surely race has long since been a factor in life any more, especially life as elected by the general populous. I can't imagine that's the sole reason for the hooplah around the world.

But then people seem to think the guy will somehow save the world from all its sins. Bush was a numptie, make no mistake about that, but whilst he did plenty of damage even he didn't manage to mess the world up entirely. How much power do people think the US president has? He's inheriting a budget that's in an almighty mess, so once again, how much financial clout does he have to play with?

All seems rather naive that people have sucked in the message for change and amped it up ten fold. Whoever won the seat wouldn't have changed things that much. He's made a lot of promises, big ones at that, but I simply don't think things will be that easy. I doubt any of us want to see troops in Iraq for much longer but it's not as simple as saying we'll withdrawl and thus it happens. Universal healthcare the same. Very noble and all but with the budget deficit where it is, how on earth will that be possible?

All seems a rather shallow devotion akin to that of following your favourite X Factor contestant.

For the sake of balance I think the above applies to whomever gets into office. The simple facts of politics are that you have to make do with what you inherit. Undoing policies are pretty difficult. Passing new ones when you don't have any money is even more so. I just cannot see the sweeping change that people seem to be expecting over the next four years.

I'm really glad for America and the world. I agree with Bruce that Obama is over-hyped but then that is politics these days. I for one don't expect this "second coming" to be any more than an effective president. Still, he's young, capable and possesses a social conscience. Just what America needs after two terms of a Bush administration.

Good post, Bruce. It's all very reminiscent of 1997, when Blair was elected on a wave of optimism. Out with the old, stuffy, corrupt regime and in with this energetic, young crusader. The country was saved, things could only get better. And things did get better, in my opinion. But clearly things could only get marginally better.

Obama has the extra problem of inheriting a terrible economy and the mess that is Iraq. Oh yeah, and then there is terrorism and Iran that looks like it's flexing its muscles again. Obama has taken the presidency at a very tough time. I hope people's expectations, in the cold light of day, reflect the difficult job he has.

But I'm really pleased that we've got rid of Bush. I don't hate Bush, I just think he was a disaster globally.

He's inherited a messed up econamy an country. The next 4 years are going to be extremly hard, make no mistake. I think he's the right appointment thou, so good look to the chap.

You could never get worse than Bush, so upwards an onwards...

I have not read any of this as my wifes in intensive care but there is a black American family in the same boat as me and talked about this last night and they are convinced he wont last 12months as big money and nutters will want him gone.its sad I hated thatcher but never got a gun to shoot her.

Thatcher was incredible, wasn't she? And I mean incredibly callous and indifferent to those at the bottom of the economic ladder. My politics were actually formed during the Thatcher years and it has taken me a long, long time to forgive that woman for what she did to the north of the country. And unfortunately the legacy still lives on.

Thatcher was the best thing that happened to this country. This country was an utter mess when she took over. The changed we needed to make as a country wasn't an easy one to make but she had the courage to do it. That's something you won't see from the current crop who flip flop their views depending on who they talk to.
