Qualifications for becoming a PI

Surprisingly, there are no qualifications for becoming a Private Investigator in the UK. You can obtain a Private Investigator’s licence, providing you don’t have a criminal record, but it is not compulsory to be licensed and you can operate as a PI without one.

So, the only thing that differentiates one PI from another is the amount of knowledge and experience they have and that’s why undergoing training is so important if you want to be successful as a Private Investigator.

ICI’s Executive Diploma of Private Investigation is a course that will teach you everything about PI work, from surveillance and tracing techniques to navigating privacy laws and remaining compliant with the law.

If you’re thinking about a career as a Private Investigator, it will provide you with the tools you need to become a successful PI and give you a head start over others when applying for jobs.

Sounds a bit like becoming a life coach

Interesting.

After some consideration I've just altered my career path and am now Ming PI.

I'll crawl through the gutter scum to unearth the evidence you need. Or possibly use Google.

I'm available on retainer to snoop for the good people of GOT.

Does anyone of any experience of private investigators? Maybe someone has hired one to check on a dodgy business partner or they are even a private investigator themselves?

How do you even get into that line of work?

Serious answers only please.
It normally starts like every other day, cold, wet, and boring. But yesterday, as the clock struck 6, I turned off the light, lit the last of my smokes, threw the empty packet in the bin, and as I was putting on my coat, in she walked...

That's pretty much all there is to it, mate...

Used to moonlight for one many years ago, doing weekend work.

Mainly process serving, but did a few babysitting jobs, looking after high profile clients, keeping the press away from their houses etc.

It was quite while paid and interesting, but the hours where massively anti social.

Well, I guess it all can't be as exciting as the movies.

I'd imagine a large portion of PI's income would come from cheating spouse cases.

Getting hired to follow a suspected cheating husband/wife and spending most of the time outside of seedy motels/massage parlours/brass houses, waiting for the one money shot that's going to get them paid.

Most of what they do seemed to be chasing down debtors.

People who’d done a runner with things like lease cars or stopped paying the finance on cars. Stuff like that.

Used to play golf at a club overrun with retired former FBI holding PI licenses.

They operated at the upper end of the business. Most of them were trained in accountancy, because they were working drug cases in the '80s and '90s, so they were the guys you hired in a divorce if your spouse was hiding half a million from the judge. (Or if your spouse did a runner with half a million.)

Most states in the US allow no-fault divorces for irreconcilable differences, so cheating spouse stakeouts are largely a thing of the past. Process serving is a big part of a more traditional PI's caseload.

You should write that Jilly Cooper stuff, cos this post was steamy stuff, and finished on a money shot.
