On a serious note I don’t think rep is a substitute.

1) you can’t rep on current affairs posts so anything that you want to follow up on from a post in there needs to be done either by rep on a completely unrelated post in another forum, a pm, or derailing the current affaira thread which could well have moved on way past that initial comment.
2) +5 rep “sorry your dog died” doesn’t really seem to be appropriate

I appreciate this could just be specific to how I use rep/profile posts, just really miss it!

I've always been a believer in building on what works, and removing what isn't used.

With regards to profile posts;
  • Less than 0.5% of registered members ever left a profile post.
  • Throughout the month of September, there was on average of just 1.6 profile posts made per day. This is the daily breakdown;

I also reviewed any peaks to see if we could build on them but they were typically just whenever some decided to pile on someone.

I also found it telling that more people went into their account to disable public views of their profile page in September than the number of profile posts left.

I understand the point of;

"Really miss it myself, was a nice compromise between posting something that might derail a thread (especially as I am on different timezone and so often get to things late) and setting up a private message"

... But the quote+multi quote exists for a reason and replying to an earlier post in a thread certainly isn't derailing a thread.

And if someones dog dies, I'd pop them a direct message?

In the past whenever I've removed things like post count display, or groups or a chatbox it provokes a response. The decisions aren't made on a whim, they're informed/mods are consulted and it's not final - if enough people decide they suddenly miss that option or we notice it's missed I'll just switch it back on.

Sorry to hear about your dog
