When I used to want to do this I got into video editing and 3D graphics and stuff. I'd edit my mates game clips and make really bad montages as they were called. I became okay at one point but never carried on as I grew out of it. Could be a possible route even though I er, *ahem* legally *ahem* acquired the software. I'll try and find something I made. I remember I modelled an iMac once but the pictures have been removed and they're on my other PC.

This is just something I done, not amazing by any means. Just throwing the idea in there.

What software would you recommend downl... I mean purchasing ?

Tell him to go and hang around down at the shops and pull some endos on his bmx ffs.

He'll more than likely spend his adult life staring at a monitor.

He'll be doing that with his camera mounted on and then making some fancy vids.

Endo's ffs, he does Tabletops with a kickout over the church railings.

For video editing I used Sony Vegas and Adobe After Effects. For the 3D stuff I used Cinema 4D, really high end professional program though. All of them are really but a few beginner YouTube videos will have you going in no time, trust me. They do seem daunting but once you get the basics, you're sorted.

There's thousands of videos out there to get people up and running. If I could do it at the ages of 14 I'm sure anyone can.

If you need any help just give me a shout and I'll see where I can point you with them!

Little edit - If you can, push the 3D stuff as much as you can if it's enjoyable. Two people who I used to watch religiously on YouTube have done work for TV Companies in UAE, games companies and one even worked for Manchester United!

We have an IT Club in my Primary School. They do various programming classes for kids after school. One of the programs they use is Scratch. It's quite basic tho, so might be below your lads level, but could be quite good as an introduction into how programming works. I don't know what the cost would be, asaik we got it free. I'm sure there's another program we use, but i'd have to check at school to see what it is.

I was going to suggest http://scratch.mit.edu/ too, and also http://www.makeymakey.com/

Another nice project is http://www.helloruby.com/, which is a story book for youngsters that teaches logic and so on. Might be a bit young for your lad though.

he has used scratch a little bit at school and it is great but a little young....supposed to be for 8-16 year olds.

@Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian the idea of a mounted camera is not that mad is it. they are always messing around on bikes.

When that goes wrong, at least you won't need to worry about having the grand children left with you all the time, or indeed having grand children at all. Plus the vid will go viral so everyone's a winner.

.......what you are suggesting is probably fine, just be careful your not pushing him in a direction he doesn't like or is not technically able to grasp. Its understandable you are concerned but you'll look back when he's older and find he's discovered his niche. He'll be a good lad because he has a Dad who cares.

Reading the original post the impression of it I got was my son plays games online with his mates, hoe can I spoil the fun and make it educational? lol

really good thing to get into programming. The minute you understand it and can actively do it then people will throw money at you to do it. If only I had the attention span of a 12 year old lol

This is all spot on, is right.

Also, B.O.T. - I saw something somewhere the other day about a Rasberry Pi based laptop you can build yourself... might be worth looking into.
