Proper fumin’

If it's been stood a long while ... how sure are you its not fuel / rust / water in the tank (OK unlikely in Aus, but ya gotta wonder.
I've checked in the tank with an endoscope camera cleaned and drained it, replaced the fuel pump which was knackered, took the hose off the filter and sprayed petrol everywhere - good pressure / flow.
I will check the fuel pressure relief valve for blockage though
It could be a component getting hot in use - a thermal camera would be useful if you can get to see the electronics board.

Could be a mouse making a nest in your air filter and getting its arse sucked into the inlet.
Nah, all clear

I know It's easy to get fixated on 1 idea but due to the almost Instantaneous cut out the vibe I'm getting is electrical.

It would be nice bonus to get it reliably working, but the main purpose is to stop me getting bored.
Get up, find new problem, find way to solve problem, some slow, some quick, some cheap, some not so cheap...
well look at the time - beer o'clock already, where does your day go

Takin it one day at a time.

You trying to cheer me up?
@chrismpw
tbh, it didn't 'feel' like an ecu thing.
I'd had it running for 5, 6 mins to...
a) test the newly installed cooling system for leaks
b) see the temp gauge moving as the thermostat cuts in and out.
The gauge was just coming up to 90c and it just cut out,
Checked fuel OK
I know compression was OK
Chased the lack of spark back to the coil

You have to bear in mind this is a 1981 British Leyland ( 😱😭🤮 ) prototype fuel injection system. It's a transition thing, it's still a mixture of very early - read simple - electronics and mechanical components

Fuel delivery control, aka, Throttle Potentiometer - think ; volume knob on an old style radio

Fancy electronics it ain't.

Its been in a shed for 15yrs and this was the first time this has run since.
There are some diodes, resistors, condensers, etc doted around, could be the run up to full heat has fried one, or a wire has shorted out.
Baby steps
Keeps me busy and out of the wife's way which is the main point.
Anything more than 2 wires monkey see monkey do is beyond me - but I'm very slowly learning.
No its just I had an ECU go haywire & they are so ruddy expensive I had a refurb one fitted ... all Chinese to me cars .... Vauxhall's back in their day put the ECUs a computer brain of the car just over the exhaust manifold so the fry up ....doh

What car is it?

Mate visited in his skoda. Next day it started up perfectly but within 1s cut out. Every time the same. Being a modern car I just shrugged and said it was electrical, but no idea what.

1 months later it's still at a garage unfixed. The latest news is it may be an abs related fault, and the ecu is having none of it.

Keep to classic cars.

1981 rover SD1 3500 SE V8 with efi...commonly known as The Flapper Valve
Still a classic (IMO)
But with enough 45 yr old cheap crap BL 'electronics' and I use the word in it loosest sense. Old jags have similar stuff in them
and you know what a pain they can be

Is there an upgrade or downgrade available? A more reliable fuel injection or a quality carb? Seeing as it's far from an original anyway, it's no great shakes to alter something else?

Really need the range rover engine model and specs, answer could jump out easily.

There's both an Up and Downgrade, both likely to cost more than I want to spend all in one lump.
I'll KBO. - as Churchill was wont to say.
It's a hobby to pass the time and to keep me and my little grey cells ticking over, if I get too fed up I'll sell it on as a WiP project.
It's in a better state than when I got it, there's always another  Fool sorry, enthusiast 🤔
