Proposed changes to the Premier league

the too many games arguement is open for debate for sure. Most managers (not just the top 6) have called for change in the PL, including Carlo on arrival.

Don't get your arguement on the life line being "American" they dont have relegation, it's actually going back to the old method pre PL here. I dont think it's a bad idea at all, IMHO it's better than a team that finishes 6th in the championship being equally rewarded as the team who finished 15 points ahead of them in 3rd

There seems to be the occasional moan about too many games, especially around Christmas. In most cases it's trotted out as an excuse by managers. In any case none have ever said they wanted the league to be reduced in size, to my knowledge. That just feels an enormous jump.

If the league cup goes it would help with game reduction.

Either way, it does feel a tad rich, that sides who now gone on multi-continent pre-season tours complain about too many games. Maybe they should just do less air miles in pre-season and therein have a longer rest?

I think there is an arguement to say if they really wanted it, they would gone and done it by now. My take is it is a handy threat for the "big 6" to dangle of the PL itself and the remaining clubs.

Essentially yes. If it was in any way viable they'd be gone. It's a bluff. The same way hedge fund managers etc use the "we will leave" to threaten the UK government against legislation and taxation. They have nowhere to go.

At some point the league has to start testing the will of those sides and asking who actually wants to leave. If say United wanted to leave the PL, it would be one of the most stupid decisions they could take. I'm surprised more teams haven't grown a bit braver and just called them out. If you want to go and play each other every week, go and do so. See how long the novelty lasts before it starts to wear off.

Why does it “need to happen”?

Why do we, the fans, ”need” to see our football fix cut from 38 games per season to 34?

Why do we need to see one of a mere three domestic trophies abolished, cutting by a third our chances of winning something?

Why can they not re-distribute their wealth down the foofball pyramid irrespective of this “Big Picture” business?

Screw the RS, screw the Red Mancs and screw the horses they rode in on.

I remember reading Naomi Klein on the Shock Doctrine, and essentially they invent a crisis and set the paramaters for how things have to change. It seems to follow this rhetoric. The question is why? Even in their own terms, the PL has never been so succesful. It is a world leading product now. There is no evidence to suggest a league with less teams would be more successful.

The kopites would hate it eventually. Because sooner or later, they'd be finishing 10th or worse.

People also point out the no relegation thing would be boring, but there'd also be nothing to qualify for. For example you finish second, what do you get? The square root of sod all and a pat on the head.

Power & cash grab, pure and simple.

After this broke I spent a couple of hours loitering around Man UTD and Liverpool forums to get a gauge of their thoughts and it was good to hear that most I read were against the Top 6/9 'mafia', one post stood out on RAWK.

[Poor language removed] me, some of the lame justification going on in here.

Two clubs that are owned by American billionaires propose fundamental changes to a cash rich sport they've become involved in relatively recently. During a pandemic.

These changes hand future power to a "Big Six" clubs, some of whom are only members of that elite group because of an accident of timing. At the start of the PL, if you were asked to name the 6 biggest clubs in England, how many of you would have suggested City or Chelsea? Big clubs my arse.

But along come an oligarch, a middle eastern oil state, and a few US capitalists, and now they're setting themselves up as the arbiters of the future of the entire sport. And some people are actually [Poor language removed] buying it.

As soon as I saw Coco's endorsement, I knew there was no good in this. That [Poor language removed] clown couldn't even organise ticket allocations competently.

I don't even think a European Super League is the end game. I think a more global one is. Why play a game at a 60K seat Anfield, in a relatively poor Northern city in the UK, when you could hawk the rights for Liverpool v Madrid to any super sized stadium that wanted to pay a nice fat fee for the privilege? Why lumber yourself with your own stadium at all? Who needs the overhead? Who needs the "noise" you have to deal with from the pesky locals [cheeky bastards sometimes have the gall to protest over prices!]?

Just pimp the franchises out around stadiums globally, and collect the PPV fees.

Oh, and the irony of the PL getting all hurt and offended over a blatant attempt at a money driven power grab. [Poor language removed] me.

Modern football fans really do deserve modern football owners.

With Man City spending all that cash and Chelsea before them, coming in and disrupting the status quo at the time. Now with Tottenham more consistent, Leicester winning the PL and maybe pushing top 6 again, Everton finally getting their act together matching a manager with their wealth. Wolves even. The likes of Man Utd and Arsenal are no longer guaranteed Champions League or even Europa League Football. I wonder why the top 6/9 want to decide who can or cannot buy a club?

Why should those clubs decide what is best when the picture could be different in the next 5 years?

All this talk about a Super League, I'd actually feel for the real fans of those clubs if that happened. You know they are plastics when they think it's a good idea. Maybe it's a little different being a lower league fan but away days and travelling the country is one of the best things about football.

I really hope that's not something we're going down the line with.

Selling our soul to the big six in return for stadium discount.

Really can't see us going along with this.

Are we really gonna allow spurs to have rights we don't have? What exactly have they done?

Also, can you really see Mosh going "yeah, you 6 clubs can veto me selling to somebody if I so choose"?

Yeah, me neither.

We would have the rights to our new stadium.

Well actually i can tbh, don't forget that Blue Bill has it sown into the DNA of this club that we should play along with the whole 'plucky little Everton' thing. Mosh is still pretty new in football and half the reason Kenwright is still there is because he is the guy with experience of a football boardroom, and we all know Bill does'nt like to rock the boat too much. I really can't see this happening though certainly not anytime soon.
