Tim made me more aware of the club, but Martinez was a tremendous pundit for the USA coverage of the 2014 world cup.
But beyond that, I knew that the already-popular clubs (Man U, City, Arsenal, that red one) weren't for me because I didn't really believe the US fans actually cared about those teams (except for the ones with parents from the UK, or some other legit tie back to the club, etc.) But when I read some posts here and other places from US fans, I felt Everton and their fans had a far more special culture.
After attending my first game at the bar here in NYC, everything was quickly confirmed. I'm not a seasoned Premier League fan but I am a seasoned sports fan, and I think it gives you a good sense of when things just feel right (unless you're a gloryhunter, which I'm not.) Everton just felt right. I've lived in 5 major US cities that had multiple pro teams, and I only ever picked one other (Atlanta Braves, my hometown.)
Finding and following Everton is about as close to instantly falling in love as I think I'll ever experience - too bad for my future wife(s).
