SOME OF THE RAFAEL BENITEZ PRESS CONFERENCE

Benitez on taking Everton job
Obviously I know about the club, about the tradition, the history & the ambition of the owners. All these things, for anyone who knows the history of the club, it's quite easy. I'm at home. I want to compete, to challenge for whatever you challenge"

Benitez on the banner near his home

To be fair, the Evertonians around my place are quite happy and very supportive, even the Liverpudlians accepted it was an opportunity. About the banners, we can talk about one, two people - you never know."

Benitez's targets at Everton

My approach, since I was at Valencia, was one game at a time. I know how the team finished last year, we will try to do better. I prefer to walk the walk and see if we can do well.

Benitez On Small Club Comments

I said before that it depends on the context. It's a long time ago. You are fighting for your club & it's what I will do now. In this case, I will fight for Everton, try to do the best in every single game & fight against anyone

Benitez on Denzel Dumfries links

I'm quite happy with the commitment of the lads. They are training well. I think we can improve things. If we can add players & they are good for us,
that is the objective

Reservations over appointment

That is football. All I can say is I will fight for my team. For me it's a great challenge and opportunity to do well in the Premier League. I will be the first one pushing to get what we want.

Benitez's On approach

I am professional and very competitive. I have confidence that we've done it before, and we can do it now. We are creating an atmosphere that will allow us to compete at the maximum level.

Rafael on Winning the fans over

When I was in Chelsea, in Cobham, I was going to the supermarkets and the fans were really good. The majority of the fans every day were fine. Liverpool is my city, now obviously a lot of people on the Blues side will be pleased if I'm successful.

Rafael on turning Everton around

The Premier League isn't easy for anyone. My idea is just to be sure the team has confidence, the players we have are stronger if they stick together. The target is to improve, how much we can improve we'll have to see.

The winning mentality has to be there from the first until the last day. I am confident that we will do it, and the conversations with senior players have been in this direction.

Rafael on how Everton appointment came about

Modern football is quite complicated. When someone knew I was available, then we started the contacts. Little by little we shared information, and it was easy for me. They had to consider a lit of options.

Rafael on the banners

I was convinced when I decided to say yes, or even decided to start talking. It's not something I'm scared of, it's the opposite. I want to win, I want to do well. That is to be competitive for me, to be ambitious.

Meeting Duncan Ferguson

I knew him obviously because I was following games throughout the years. I watched some of the goals he scored, after watching him on the pitch he could play! If we need a striker still he could play

Rafael on Merseyside

I have a great connection with the city, supporting a lot of charities and having friends on both sides. I'm really pleased and proud to be here, and hopefully to do well.

Rafael on James Rodriguez

I am sure your friends will be asking about players, but I think it's better to talk about the team than individuals because it’s not fair on the others.

Rafael on Everton Style

I think we have to create a team that will be competitive, that has to fight for the shirt from the first minute until the last. It doesn't matter about the name of the opponent. Try to win, that's it"

Rafael on Coleman

Since I am here I've talked with him so many times, I think he's an inspiration for everyone, very good professional and today 20 minutes before I came here I was talking to him and he can be a key player. Can he be the captain? Yes, why not?"

He goes on about being accepted by the fans, but the reality is, most fans are unlikely to abuse him to his face. The ones he will be in direct contact with, arent going to give him grief. Logically you are going to surround yourself with a few yes men, and thats all he has done so far in terms of exposing himself to the fan base.

A sentiment free interview. Good. A bit of cold hard professionalism is whats needed here. Not this silly misty eyed view that it’s a special club with special lads who do a load of special things off the pitch. That’s got us nowhere. This bloke is being completely upfront on saying he is completely unarsed by anything other than trying to win every game.
