He’s been in and out - he’s never been great defensively and that was Benitez’s concern. Plus we just didn’t have the cash once Inter came in

I’d say someone who can’t get into this Inter team would probably still walk into our team, though mate. They’d batter us

My general point was, whether we have £1.7m or £170m to spend in a window, Benitez is getting the final say

Because Brands is inept, yes.

Do you think that £1.7m was badly spent?

I hate to break it to you but we won't be appointing anyone with a better CV than Benitez mate.

Hence why talk of replacing him is futile.

This is basically the most compelling reason to not want him gone, and believe me I am frustrated with him.

I'll add something else in. There may be a world that there are good, unknown managers kicking about. There is no world where our board find them though.

Essentially unless we drop into the bottom 6 and look in relegation trouble, I sense he stays. That's the standard for the club now. It's a bit depressing, but that's what we have signed up to IMO.

I'm not having a go at Benitez for it, but by the same token we might as well forget about Brands when it comes to recruitment. It's been widely reported Benitez sorted out every deal this summer so transfers will now be something to judge him on as he is making the calls. He is making the decisions so he did ultimately make the call to not push the boat for AMN (fine) or Patterson etc (again, I'm fine with it, btw, he's totally unproven).

Brands is either inept at his job or not being allowed to do his job - either option makes him surplus to requirements and useless.

And I do think the £1.7m was well spent.

I agree with this and I don't think I've actually said, with any serious conviction, in here that I want Benitez sacked. Because I don't, because that means it's another failure and Everton have lost games and I don't want Everton to lose games.

But we have won one game in nine, the footy is atrocious and I do not think this guy was the right appointment. Not one bit. He's a poor manager in my mind and has been for some time. But still, I would rather we not be in a position where we have to sack him.

That being said, I feel he's got to take four points from the next three games or it could get very ugly and very panicky very quickly.

I agree with most of this. I dont think this board will act particularly logically.

4 points from 3 games probably gets him to January

People who are insistent that people are blaming Benitez for everything are also the same ones going: 'why aren't the board being questioned'?

They literally are, by everybody. All of the fan channels, everyone on social media, in here, knows that the top of the club is an absolute shambles. But the two aren't mutually exclusive.

What do you mean by that?

If it goes wrong, why would we keep the way of playing that's led to it going wrong?

Because if he signs players that largely all have pace, are direct, can tackle etc and are suited to counter attacking football if Benitez fails someone else can come in and utilise that system but make tweaks that potentially held us back under Rafael.

Whereas at the moment thats impossible as you have a ton of players who all suit a mixed bag of systems.

We need a manager for a good 2-3 seasons to actually build a squad and see where we go from there imo.

Spot on mate - its the same with Brands/the recruitment team - do we really have belief in them being able to unearth top talent?

I certainly dont!
