I didn't want Benitez here but the other names bandied about at the time softened the blow when he did arrive.
I saw the flack the appointment brought and respected my fellow blues who despised the man. I was prepared to forgive and forget if it brought us any improvement over the dire years of Ronald,Silva,Sam and Ancelotti.
The flack started too early for me and thought it only right to cast a judgement in the New Year. His early stick was personal and not football related anyway.
I've willed the bloke to succeed with all my heart and in his defence he's had an awful time with an injury hit squad.
After a great start where I thought his tactics were very calculated, shrewd and ones that worked the baffling decisions he started making made me understand the mounting criticism a little more, baffling decisions that have carried on up until today.
This game today with a healthy-ish squad and at home to a decent but very beatable Brighton should have been the springboard to flick the on switch for the rest of the season.
Then I saw the team sheet at 1pm, oh dear oh dear.
The back 5 on paper seemed again baffling when at home, and the reality on the pitch was a shambles where Jonjo Kenny turned out to be pick of the bunch, again baffling to leave Digne out and bring Kenny in then switch Coleman to the left, why?
We should have lined up in an aggressive 433 against these, a conventional and in position back 4, with Gordon and Gray DCL attacking them from the off. However not to be, you'd think we were away at City trying to steal a point the respect we gave them, far too stand offish for a home tie against these. When we did in a couple of short spells put any pressure on them they wilted, yet we seemed to back off as soon as the momentum built.
He needs a good transfer transfer window to sort this now, I'm hoping it's not the same old window where we sign big money unknowns when teams "smaller" than us are chasing the Ings, Madisons and Martials.
Very dissapointed at present and looking for a miracle but sadly it needs a big one, and the display from some of our once highly rated players left me cold today, bar Gray, Gordon and Pickford. Is our back line as bad as this or is it how they are asked to play? As bad a defensive display as I've seen for years, I'd be gutted if I was still paying for a season ticket I'll be honest.
I'm at the point now where if Benitez walks/gets pushed or simply vanishes I'll not care in the slightest, even if that is us back at square one for the umpteenth time in 5 years. So very depressing.
