Brighton are another team who play on the front foot so hopefully we keep up the intensity. I am however much more interested (and worried) about our cup match tomorrow, as these are the types of games against seemingly inferior opposition that our boys have crumbled in. If Mr. Benitez can get them to keep up the same level we have seen in the previous matches I will be very pleased indeed.

Well no, we don’t tend to lose to lower league teams in cups. Once in about 13 years it’s happened, against Millwall.

Aye lad but we lose plenty of games to inferior opposition. the Liverpool youth team in Carlo's first few in charge, Southampton on pens in the 4th round of the Carabao in 2018, as well as the Millwall match, Norwich in 2016 in the Carabao. Swansea City in the third round in 2014. We seem to have some demons to exorcise, particularly in this competition. Hopefully the quarterfinal runs last season will make the boys think they have some unfinished business.

Think he's set us up well so far, would like to see us do something like this though if JPG is good to go:

Pickford

Coleman/New RB-----Godfrey-----Mina---------Digne

JPG
Doucoure-------Allan

Gray--------------------------------Richarlison
DCL

Couldn't give a toss about the cup comps this season tbh - the team isn't strong enough to go all the way at present.

My focus is solely on the league - get into europe and earn more dough from finishing positions etc and see us recruit better next summer then focus on the cups.

I hope Rafael does the opposite, we need that 1995 stat ended, and the money from league places and EL is minimal.
Also, I got a good feeling the title race will be tight which might take focus off cups.
Rafael will understand how important a cup will be for us, and if anyone can make us compete he can.

in order to develop the winner's mentality required to make the team push on, I think we need to eventually win something lol

Any team outside of about 4-5 clubs can say that though mate - being realistic we are as likely to win the league as we are to win a trophy particularly when Guardiola goes all out for the cups and you have Chelsea, Utd, RS etc able to field 2x full strength 11's of quality in multiple competitions.

Being realistic we are at minimum 12 months off being where we need to be squad wise to mount a realistic challenge - the cups for me are a distraction this year whilst we still have players like Coleman, Keane and Iwobi in the starting 11.

We would have to aim to put the tie to bed early with a line-up like that, really.
It's a conundrum for Benitez.

I think he will go with the strongest side possible, with 1-2 exceptions perhaps.

From this side, you could argue that Coleman, Allan, DCL, and Richarlison shouldn't be starting, or perhaps even featuring at all.

The reality is different though. It's why we need bodies.

Play a weakened side, lose the ties, and knives out before the end of August.

Can't believe I'm typing this but......looking at Arsenal and Arteta you can really see the difference a competent and experienced manager like ....arggh...Benitez can make.
Arteta looks totally out of his depth and the policy of just buying young players looks totally flawed ( unless the Arsenal board are prepared to put up with poor results for 2 years whilst that group of players grow together)
Benitez on the other hand seems to have a plan and ( at least at the moment ) , have motivated players made them much fitter and is getting a good return from players who struggled at the end of last season.
I think that is what you get from someone with experience.

Thats it mate, dread to think who would could of got if we hadnt off been in the right place at the right time to get Rafael, we really couldnt afford another risk and failure, this time we had to be sensible and get stability
