9.5M is steep as [Poor language removed],

but Martinez wanted him but you can pay 9.5M for a player to come and sit on the bench ???

While the fee is lot higher than originally dubbed (I imagine we will hear some explanation for this in the coming days, as in Argentina it is down at around 5.5 million) it represents a good opportunity for us.

As a 24 year old he has just been capped for one of the best teams in the world. His defensive partner has just been sold for over 30 million. Even if he's Argentina's Ryan Shawcross we have paid less than we would have done for Shawcross for him.

Of course Vickery's opinion of him is important and he's seen a lot more of him than any of us. But we'd have still scouted him to the same degree Vickery has seen him. What Vickery probably underestimates is a couple of things. Firstly he will have time to acclimatise to English football. He is not going to be thrown in at the deep end, and can be eased in. Secondly he will be playing alongside Jagielka, in front of Howard, behind Barry and McCarthy, alongside Coleman and Baines as his fullbacks. All of these players are very experience and know the league very well. They will help him, and Barry in particular will be quite adept at perhaps covering his weaker areas allowing him to focus on his strengths.

Demichelis was written off by many, but after a 6 month bedding in period went on to be a real tank for City. We can but hope this lad will have the opportunity to bed in without being too scrutinised before hopefully producing similar results. What we don't really need is people slating the lad from minute 1 as our "4th most expensive signing" if he doesn't hit the ground running. I can see why the board have happily disclosed this fee as it gets people off their backs, but I do worry it is going to pile the pressure on the lad himself and Martinez.

I can hear the Chelsea media now "Martinez thinks Stones is worth 40 million, but he thought Mori was worth 10" etc etc and it being a stick to beat us with, so that was somewhat irresponsible of the board to release that figure. The Echo couldn't wait to get that figure out there so I am suspicious of it.

I have never seen this lad play but have read a couple of descriptions of him. He seems to range from 6 ft 1 to 6 ft 3 and his strengths appear to be his aerial prowess and also how comfortable he is on the ball but at times he looks prone to the odd mistake and his positioning/awareness of the speed of the premier league might catch him out. In all honesty this does sound quite similar to aspects of John Stones (though I wouldn't say Stones was dominant aerially as he might be yet).

When one first watched Stones at Centre half, it would have been very easy to say "no he won't have what it takes to be a top level centre half" especially if he was 24. And the same could well be true of Mori, there is no guarantees that he will improve or develop as we might hope, so Vickery is certainly not wrong.
However he does sound the stereotypical Martinez Centre half. Comfortable on the ball, powerful but prone to mistakes. We should note though, that under Martinez not only Stones, but also increasingly Browning and Galloway have really come on under his guidance. I think, if given support, and the senior players above I've mentioned stay fit he stands every chance of developing and improving his game to fit in.

I have maintained throughout this window that I think Martinez's plan for the next 12 months was to keep Stones for at least this season. IF we had to sell him it would be done no earlier than next summer. We could then assess how ready Mori was to step in. We'd also have Browning and Galloway who may be ready to step up, as well as possibly Pennington/Holgate. I still think that's Roberto's plan.

I know I've gone on a lot, but our biggest weakness last season we looked susceptible to balls into the box. Jagielka is a fantastic blocker/tackler but is not the most imposing in the air. I am hoping this lad can give us that bit of height we've been missing.

The guy has won the Copa Libertedores and scored in it.

There's my scouting done for you all.

What has [Poor language removed] van Dijk won apart from the Scottish Mickey Mouse league?

Presume this has already been posted but just in case: - from the Guardian

A fascinating update from Andy Hunter about Everton’s signing of Ramiro Funes Mori – if the suggestions prove true, this is a quite mindboggling state of affairs:

It is being suggested that the reason Ramiro Funes Mori’s price increased from £6.25m to £9.5m was because his River Plate contract entitled him to 50% of any transfer fee and, rather than risk the deal collapsing, Everton decided to pay the extra £3.25m with no central defensive alternatives lined up at this late stage in the window. Also claimed Everton only became aware of Funes Mori’s entitlement late last week. Everton have not confirmed or denied the allegation.

You can relate agents fees to 'sweat equity'; this is why they can be deferred. The fees are only liable after the work is completed.

That means any associated taxes are also only due after the work is completed. After when payments were due.

This is probably the cause of the delay and a few complications, negotiating the contracts for payment.

Despite what Andy Hunter has said to probably try and embarrass Everton - I am not concerned.

Negotiating a contract - about WHEN the fees are due is no issue.

BTW 'sweat equity' would be a criteria in trying to determine if the fee is a legitimate fee or not (e.g. a bribe). Also the nature of the work would be covered in the contracts between the club and the agent/player as needed.

You are confusing all sorts of issues here. yes provision will be made in respect of potential add ons but the fees in respect of the transfer will be due .Asfor when taxes are due again not strictly correct certain taxes become payable on invoice

The point here isn't so much will be due after year one or two etc the transfer fee will feature in full as will any provision for future payments . Amortisation will of course come into play but the sum being paid immediately is going to be way over 20% of the total transfer fee.

Mate you don't issue an invoice until the contract says you do and that will have a provision for the work having been completed. Also and you don't pay a tax on anything until the invoice is issued as its not in the company books until that point.

This 20% figure is going to be split up. Its more than perfectly legal to do that. Its normal.

Andy Hunter.

Big word there. Allegation.

It does seem steep. Centre half was a necessity though. Trouble is nobody knows anything about him so its difficult to judge. Van Dijk has cost 11.5m coming from a poorish league. Interesting to see how he goes by comparison.
