Dont the younger players get selected for the national side before big moves then or they actually need to move overseas first before getting called up?

Do you think if hed moved to europe a couple of seasons ago hed have more caps then?

How does he compare to the other national team centre backs?

Maybe I'm not understanding, mate, but River Plate is rival to Wanderers is the uruguayan one. Funes Mori played in the argentinian one. The biggest, to be clear. :D

For those who are worried about FM has just one cap, have to know that it's not very usual here to call to play for national team players who don't play overseas (or had a career in Europe). It's not like in UK. He is in the squad to play next two friendlies, the only CB from argentine league.

Just spoke to River season ticket holder. He was disappointed. He also thought we still had Rom on loan but no idea which club from. And he was Irish.

Younger players: They don't need to move first, it depends on the national coach, but it wasn't usual that young players were called before a move. Maybe some rubbish friendly but not important matches or tournaments. Coaches prefered players with european experience, guys who play in the highest level every week. There were just a few example of young players performing in Argentina with a real chance to play with Argentina. Funes Mori was one of them but, for example, wasn't enough to be in the last Copa America squad.
Coach Gerardo Martino called now 24 players for next two friendlies: the 23 Copa America men + Funes Mori. It doesn't seem irrelevant.

FM moving couple seasons ago: Really difficult answer because is an hypothesis but... Ramiro wasn't the player he shows today. Definitely. No one thought in 2013 he could turn a CB like he is now. He is in his best moment so far now, plenty of confidence and time to step forward is now. I have serious doubts about what he could do playing in Europe two years ago with 22 y/o. It should been a question of luck: right team, right coach, right league, right development. Too much rights...

Comparison: I think Garay, Otamendi, Demichelis, Musacchio are better than him right now. Now. They have more european and national team experience. I adore Ramiro and I know that win a Libertadores, a Sudamericana and an argentine league is far to be easy. I know european fans usually think they are rubbish and Wigan could win them. Very far to be true, mate. It's really very difficult. Ask french guy Gignac. Oh, the Marseille star!... He couldn't touch a ball in both finals against Ramiro and Maidana (the other CB).
But I know also it's not the same speed, same pitches, same pace, same fowards in front like in La Liga or BPL. I think he has all the skills and the strong character to be a good one there with time to settled. Maybe not a big star but a good one or very good one with time to adapt and confidence behind.
It's quite probable he will not play too much this season, so will be difficult for him to be in the Argentina squad oftenly. Maybe could help he is the only left-footed of the guys I mention. But it will depend on his progression and the other's level.

Hope my answer was useful!
