Referee for Palace

Genuine question, how many good referees do we have in the league? Is there any referees you would be happy to have?

I personally think they are average to crap so makes no odds to me.

Match report already written. " Zaha showing Everton what they have missed out on after he wins three pens by VAR"

We have none. Not one is decent.

Some are worse than others. Moss and especially Lee Mason come to mind.

That said, VAR should hopefully play a part in sorting them out.

Are these same useless referees doing the var? Or is it specialist folk they have trained up?
VAR will be an absolute joke. It'll be about 2 weeks in when we see some crazy VAR decision that turns a game in the last minute to unfairly award a team a penalty. And surprise surprise it'll be to the benefit of one of the 'big six'. Nailed on.

Every Monday morning in the papers, radio, tv and on here people will be discussing VAR decisions. CBA listening to ex pros and ex gash refs debating why Salah got away with another dive again.

Spot on. It'll be "there was slight contact" for the likes of Salah to be awarded penalties after VAR reviews, and "contact not enough to go down" for the likes of Richarlison. There is no way this evens out the playing field as the power still remains with the referees to make the actual decisions. Only offside decisions will be improved by VAR.

  • Goals
  • Penalties
  • Direct red cards
  • Mistaken identity
"VAR will automatically check these situations, often in the background while play is resuming. The final decision will be with the on-field referee, however"

In 18 of the 20 Premier League grounds, big screens will signify that the VAR is in use, what decision it is in use for, and what the outcome is, with a short clip showing the final incident.

And the outcome will cause more arguments than it solves.

That happens now. The benefit of VAR is that it makes the referees have to look at it and use an ounce of objectivity, because they can't pretend they 'didn't see it' for the smaller teams.

It's a leveller.

Let's see. I just see it maintaining the status quo. I desperately hope it works to make the game fairer. If the top teams maintain their positions and VAR is working as it ought to be, no problem at all with that.

My view is honestly what more harm can it do. The bias and incompetence of the current system can't be any worse. At least now, if Salah dives and there's zero contact, the referee can't just give it - that's an instant improvement over what we have now.

I hear your point definitely. I just see it as the referee will need to go through the motions instead of instantly awarding a penalty that is a blatant dive just because he prefers a certain team to win.
