IMO the right thing to do is open up the poll in the meantime and never let it shut so it can be an ever flowing proper democratic process. The more time the more voices are heard. Nothing to fear for the impartial in the search for truth.

I think the rep system is fantastic. People saying the middle finger is good enough but. Many people who say middle finger worthy things every day still boast a positive reaction score in the thousands. Take @H.H. for example, He just got banned and his reputation was in the minus of multiple hundreds but his reaction score was in the thousands. How is the middle finger a good barometer?
