Should so much negative reputation trigger a suspension? (Prevent that user posting until at least a moderator re-approves?)

Almost a dictionary definition right there.

Regarding who's in it? Pointless to cause unnecessary bother naming names but obviously if the mention of a clique winds you up you're probably in it.

It winds me up and I'm certainly not in one. Half the people on here think I'm one of twenty-six banned members, the mods call me a pr*** and I argue/agree with anyone and everyone depending on the subject matter being discussed.

But I post a lot. So people will thing "hey, he has a lot to say, he must be part of the furniture around here."

But I'm not. It's just that I don't shut up.

There are small groups of members who know each other in reality so obviously they'll chat in a "buddy" kind of way, but I can honestly say, compared to the majority of forums I've been on, there is little to no "cliquey" presence on here.

I see your overall point on the rep system, but you unfortunately used the word clique which was way off base, and it detracted from your overall argument.

For the record, it winds me up as it's used as a way of exaggeration victimisation on here, like the person being neg repped is only being negged because they're not part of the in-crowd, when 99.9% of the time it's simply because they've said something stupid.

The best thing about neg reps is when people get all upset over them.

I think pretty much most negs i've given i've either had one back with some arsey comment or an actually pm/profile message/post in a thread somewhere moaning about.

Its hilarious.

Death has nailed it here. Especially the ones that go on to start a thread about being negged. Just crying out for a KITT.

Because you attach an initial, arsey, sarcastic comment with it that you wouldn't generally use in the forum - that's the issue.

If you posted it in the open forum, you wouldn't get that response. It's like you're simply trying to avoid anyone else seeing your true personality by being a "pr*ck by stealth".

It's not just you; it clearly goes on quite a bit and I've done it myself, so that's why I can see nigel's point about the rep system.

You should be able to report the comments if they're out of order or deliberately antagonistic. Or or... the ability to comment should be removed.

It might be funny, but it's potentially breaking the forum rules.

j ) Be threatening, abuse or invade another's privacy, or cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety;
k ) Be likely to harass, upset, embarrass, alarm or annoy any other person;

Don't get me wrong, things like the Toffeetunes incident etc. are hilarious, but it happens too often. The 81st is a prime example and a bad attitude to have on a forum - it's not "cliquey" as I understand what it aims to do, but it's still a dangerous game to play.

I think the rep system has a place as it allows members to know if people generally like or dislike their stance, but it can be open to abuse.

I think removing the comments ability is the way forward with it.

But who decides if something is stupid or not, most of the time it's just differing opinions, therefore if enough people disagree with you, and neg you, it can feel as though you are fighting the perceived "clique", especially if you are a relatively new poster.

If you get more neg rep than positive rep, then it indicates your opinion is massively against the tide of public opinion.

I have a contrary opinion to a lot of people on here, but I very rarely get negged as I back up what I say so it's clear I'm not just doing it for the purposes of being a WUM. Similarly, I wouldn't neg someone who at least tries to justify a stance, no matter how ridiculous I find it, because they simply have a different opinion.

People get negged on here solely for being WUMs or being interpreted as WUMs. Look at EFCNik's rep, Davek, mine... all controversial people on here, all very high on rep. That's not because we're all in some clique.

I think in most cases i've also told the person what i thought on the forum as well as in the rep. I actually find the fact i have to leave a comment in a neg rep annoying because i just want to neg the post same as i pos rep others and i barely ever leave a comment or my name on them, its just a thing to say i dislike the post.

Maybe in your case (and maybe others) its possibly just the comment that causes the problem, if i have to say something i do, in your case i just took the piss. I should probably just say "didn't like that post" but because you have to leave a comment you kinda end up causing more hassle than you wanted to. Not that i take back anything i've ever said in a neg rep.

It might be funny, but it's potentially breaking the forum rules.

To be fair those rules are ones that have to exist but are hardly ever ever enforced.

I think comments in reps, especially negs are there so people have to justify it rather than just do it. Maybe it should just say "didn't agree with that post" or something along the lines because certainly as i've encountered, you get tempted to tell the person what you think and it often causes trouble.

I don't get why a repuation has a comment on it, to be honest. I've always used it when I don't basically have anything to say other than "yes, good post," or "no, you're wrong there". So it allows me to do that without clogging up the forum.

But If I had anything to say, I'd write an actual reply. Hence why I spent a month just googling random quotes to use as a comment, instead.

Look everyone...it's basically this.

The rep system is what it is.

The site owners set it up. It's their site and forum so they can do what they like with it.

For some it works for some it doesn't it seems. That's life.

We're just discussing it really, i've not really got a problem with it just giving my input.

Seems its always neg reps that are the problem though.

I don't think a clique exists on here, I might agree with you on one subject, and disagree on another, same as everyone else on here. However, it can sometimes appear a clique exists, if you are on the receiving.

Outstanding response

Thanks ij.

listen mate so there's no misunderstanding I fully understand people will form friendships/alliances whatever and there's absolutely nothing wrong in that. It just seems every now and again it all gets a bit pack of wolves on newbies and given the other post bemoaning lurkers not posting I feel this neg rep doesn't help.

As Moutsgoat says "the games the game" my preference would be an opt out button for those not into the repping (green or red) leaving those that enjoy it to do their thing.

But it's just an idea, I realise the fate of the western world doesn't hang on it. (y)

Ok mate.

There are no alliances as you say.

There are friendships though. And that's a millions miles different to alliances.

People get negged when they post crap. And rightly so.

Christ. I remember getting negged the crap out of when I said we should sign Joey Barton a few years ago. And I was rightly rinsed for it. Did I whinge? Did I heck as like.
