Retaining Possession and controlling tempo

Player Valuation: £35m
One thing that I noticed at Reading, was our inability to keep the ball, distribute it intelligently from the back and control the tempo of the game.

With arteta off colour and Reading closing us down (shades of our own tactics) we needed someone to sit on the ball, take the sting out of it and retain possession and make reading think about defending.

Our direct style was found wanting when under pressure, players like Valente, Hibbert, Cars and Neville kept giving the ball away.

All the pressure was on the forwards (when long balls came their way)and Arteta and the back four - for once they couldn't handle it with panic clearances order of the day.

With some technical minded players signed, a more european style player we can learn to do this. Its something most european sides can do - this is why the closing down style rarely works in europe - european sides learn to pass it out of trouble and find room for themselves.

Fernandes could do this for us and it would take the pressure of arteta, but ulitmately the back four have to change to a degree and learn to keep the ball from the back. Something I worry Hibbert, Valente and possibly Jags and Baines will struggle to do.

Certainly Moyes' heritage as adefender is of the school of clear it first, but under the kosch it's not always the best option.

Also, a striker able to hold the ball upfield (which Anichebe failed to do) is a necessity - especially in these types of games.

Hopefully if Manny signs and Yakubu signs we can improve on this, but I still feel some coaching needs to be done in these circumstances.

Its one thing to play like that at old trafford its another thing when its reading (although they are a good, well managed team).

The Uefa Cup will be mighty difficult if we can't start with quality distribution at the back. Possession in midfield and one striker to hold the ball up at the front and another to stretch defences with pace.

we are getting there, slowly but surely.

Just don't think Reading was a blip. When we loose a game like that its often for the same reasons (as mentioned above).

(Have to say the english national side seems to suffer from the above. I think its the english problem in football).

your thoughts?

Still room for improvement mate as you mentioned, Im glad as I didnt want us to get carried away after two wins.

Fernandes will make a great improvement to the side when added, dont underestimate the difference of adding Baines and moving Neville to RB.

Although the footie we're playing, at times, now is much better than the abject gash we've been served for the past 15 years.

Agreed. I think we still need some width to our game. Even if our fullbacks give it to us. We seem lost at Reading in the first half. Second half was a different can of worms and I liked the up tempo movement on the ball. Workrate was good just couldn't get the finished product. Sort of like the Man Ure v City encounter Sunday.

totally with you on the neville at right back. Just Neville prefers to play, and moyes seems to pander to him - in midfield.

Need to see more of Baines, my recollection last season was he was good going forward but needed to improve at the back - but I can't say I scrutinised him back then.

we will see what he can do.

We have trouble when we are pressed but I think Reading will finish higher than Spurs this season. So they are a credible team. Coppell does well anticipating and manipulating other team weaknesses. He is a excellent coach and what he has done with this shell of a team reminds me of our year we finished fourth a few years back.

Agree on the Baines bit, more of a wing back but Im uber confident that Moyes will help him on this part of his game. Its a benefit that he will have the excellent Lescott on his side of the pitch for back up if he loses his man.

Neville needs to play RB, without question. Perhaps his place in the middle by Fernandes/Cahill/Da Silva (doubt it).

The thing is that Jagielka by all accounts is a better defender than a midfielder yet Moyes has put him in midfield twice when he's came on, a long term replacement for Carsley perhaps? Although he will cover for Yobo when he goes to the African Nations Cup. Jagielka made his debut for England B at RB too.

Options, its nice and its about time.

And credit to Coppell, a good manager with integrity. I like them and they fully deserved their victory on Saturday, I just hope they establish themselves in the Prem and dont get antagonised by losing managers picking holes with their game.

They play similar to us a couple of years ago, and sometimes today: without Arteta.

Interesting thread...

Suppose that for the Reading game Yobo and Baines were healthy and played instead of Hibbert and Valente. Even if the other 9 played exactly the same game, I bet it would have finished 0-0. Then today we would be talking about how we can play a [Poor language removed] game and still grab a point on the road.

In my mind, our best 4 in back (when healthy) will be solid and will distribute up for possession. As for additions, Manny would be a perfect compliment to Arteta as Mikel seems to draw a crowd these days. Having the 2 of them will put opponent's midfield in a bind. I agree Yak would help possession game a bunch too, but at what price?
