Scored a hat-trick on his RS debut - against us at Goodison. We won 4-3 but he proved to be a key signing for them in the Shankly era. Came back to haunt us when he scored the winner for Coventry in 71/2 in what was probably his last game at Goodison. Wasn't very tall but a good, intelligent player. Could look after himself as well!

He was good in his role as Greavesies' straight man and a better presenter than most ex-players.
Remember that game against Coventry, an Evertonian shouted “ ok Saint ?”
when the team coach arrived, Saint didn’t answer, the Evertonian said
“ didn’t take you long to forget your old mates” Fair play he had a good laugh.

This.
If we would've signed him instead of say, Young, he would've been almost as a big a legend for us.
He was a class act, which is why he's immortalised, even now in song.
Deep down we knew he was very, very good at what he did.
He may have played for liverpool - but wasn't a rs
My old man had a lot of respect for Saint, however he was always bewildered as to how the Vision was overlooked for the Scotland team by Ian,as an outsider looking in I would say the Saint was probably preferred as he was should we say a more "industrious" bustling centre forward than our Alex, both great in their own ways though and to both clubs:)

Lived by us for years and was a proper part of the community. No airs or graces, he wasn’t flash and had time for everyone. His wife was the same too. Just lovely people.

One of the best after dinner speakers I’ve seen too.

Not often an ex RS player gets this type of respect on here, which says all you need to know about him as a man.

Top fella.
Yup....go along with that, think he lived up from the Abbey pub by the triangle.
Nice fella, good footballer and as you said, an above average presenter and speaker.
As someone else said, he may have played for the rs but he wasn't one.
RIP

I met him a few times socially through one of my daughters and he was a very calm, pleasant and open man, who was also very knowledgeable about football.

He loved the RS without a shadow of a doubt, but he was still respectful of Everton every time I spoke to him and from what I saw on TV and on the radio.

This is one of the cases where you simply have to be magnanimous: a great footballer and more importantly a great man, so respect where respect is due.

Had 2 spells playing in South Africa during apartheid.

He was unrepentant about this.

Swiped clean no doubt in the RS history database.

:coffee:

A very good player, sharp around the box and intelligent team player. A good man as well. Known for his genial sense of humour he was at heart, an old fashioned football man who loved the game and those in it and around it.
Seeing that clip from Bellefield is a reminder of how different the game is now and how poorer we are for it
RIP Ian St. John.
When football was a sport not an industry :(

Believe he had a grudge against Shankly about the way he was 'let go' by Liverpool.

Sad news - out of the three of my fellow countrymen named in Royal Blue Mersey, there's only Ron Yeats left now. As many others have said, he was good value as both a player and a broadcaster. Amazing to think that he only won around 20 caps, which I know is more than the handful won by Alex Young, but still not that many - especially when you look at the total duds that can easily get 50 or 100 caps these days. Different era, different type. RIP Saint.

I was 10 when saint and greavsie started and I rarely missed a show for the next 7 years. Brilliant Saturday lunchtime viewing due to the relaxed and often hilarious banter between him and greaves. He looked a good player too from the clips I've seen of him, and tough with it too.

RIP Saint.
