RIP Jimmy Greaves

Was talking with my Italian father in law the other day about Paolo Maldini. We both agreed that he cut through club colours and was liked and admired as a true great throughout the football world.
Jimmy Greaves was the same. Never heard a fan of any club with anything but respect for him on and off the pitch.

RIP Jimmy.

These days being part of a handful of matches in a tournament would be enough for a player to feel as though they'd won the world cup, even if they didn't play in the final game.

Greaves was a world cup winner to all intents and purposes. It's a shame he may have felt that being left out for Hunt in the SFs and Final denied him that.
Thats how the game has changed, its a squad game today. Roger Hunt started every game, it was Geoff Hurst who replaced him.

You can tell his quality as a player by the calibre of players being named in this thread. You can tell the quality of the man by the obvious affection of those who knew personally or just from seeing him play or as a TV presenter.

A big loss to those that knew him and the game. A hero with feet of clay, but it's those feet of clay that we all identify with.

RIP

No disrepect meant here but no one ever mentions Brian Clough amongst the most prolific scorers

Quote from Wiki :-
Of the players who have scored over 200 goals in the English leagues, Clough has the highest goals-per-game ratio of 0.916,
Probably as a few were in the second division.
