Not really - Finn Harps are from Donegal. Not really any divide TBH.

Football would be up there the most popular sports in the country. We have our own Gaelic Football and Hurling in the summer months which are ethnic irish games, which are probably as, if not more popular then football in an ordinary season. Croke Park is the centre of Irish games and only recently allowed soccer and rugby in through their doors albeit untill Landsowne if finished its rebuild. I played all three games and never noticed any of the subtle undertones to be honest - they come more from people who never played, but presume.

I suppose untill the mid 90s rugby was considered the Garrison game untill the advent of the professional game and Munster and Leinster dominating Europe and Ireland Grand Slamming all over the show. I suppose an illustration of a lack of a divide is when Ulster won the first European Cup, our Rugby club was open almost all night celebrating.

No real sectarianism in Irish support these days to be fair. Last incident i remember was the national front tearing apart Lansdowne but that a good ten years ago now surely.

Thanks Neiler.

The new Landsdowne road looks amazing by the way. Let anyone look at the way that ground is hemmed in by roads and houses and say GP cant physically be redeveloped.

Funded by the Irish Rugby Football Union, the Football Association of Ireland and the Irish Government though

Only way we're getting a new stadium is if GOT organises forum trips to go see Joseph in the West End

You've cracked it. Suicide bombs on Wembley and Twickenham. Then put a cheeky bid in for the New Goodison to become the home of English rugby and football. FFS, even Bill couldn't **** that one up.

I would have preferred something a bit bigger to be honest but its been 20 years in the making so its about time. One worry is that there is no room to expand which i think is personaly extreamly short-sighted given the huge upswing in the popularity of Football in the past 20 years and Rugby in the last 10, while increased population projections would support this. It is a good example of how Goodison could be utilised.

As has been said its part funded by the state, IRFU and FAI. To be honest the state used its levarge with planning and the local authority to get this through the planning process, i couldnt have seen it being a runner without state backing. Even then many adjustments where made to the orignal design based on objections of residents, each end is single tierd for example.

Transport links arent great despite having a train running adjacent to the ground but that could be said of Ireland in general in terms of punlic transport. The easiest way of getting there to be honest in to shoot into the city centre and walk the distance through the city, i would say its the same distance as Liverpool City Centre to Goodison approx. On the brightside the walk is littered with bars either side - which for me adds to the match day expierence, but i can imagine its challenging for anyone older or who would have difficulties.

Looks ace though it has to be said the few times ive been up, the Europa League final is there next year too.

have they rotated it from where they old ground stood ?
the railway line was behind a goal wasn't it ?

No mate it was under the east stand still is (north in your picture), looks exactly the same footprint east to west but they have reclaimed a lot of land south inside the old ground that were used for corporte entertainment tents and there was a rugby training pitch in the ground itself that looks like its been reclaimed. To be fair i think they got the extra space through doing away with the training pitch inside the ground the actual footprint is the same and just reclaimed their own (IRFU) land inside the stadium. Didnt notice that to be honest untill i saw your aerial picture.

Dont think it would work at Goodison as there was Lansdowne wasnt landlocked on all four sides, they simply built over the practice pitch inside the ground and turned it into more stadium. Would be the equivenlent of knocking the Bullens road end down and building outwards if we owned that land. The only area around Goodison that isnt Land locked is the park end.

See what i mean, the stand in the east of my picture is now the stand in the south of your picture All that green space (training feilds) in the picture and corporate tents are now all gone and are part of the new stadium - so it wasnt really land locked.

I'm Irish and its quite typical to follow three teams, for me its Glentoran here in Belfast, Everton and Hibernian. ST holder at Glentoran, over about 10 a season to Everton and about 2 a season with Hibs. Used to follow the national team but can't be arsed any longer!
