Roberto Martinez discussion

No its really quite easy, if you play with 2 wingers it gives your team an attacking and defensive shape which allows the team to have a proper structure , currently we have Kone jogging around trying to look useful, when the oppos full back pushes on it pushes 1 of the CBs wide which in turn means Barry drops deeper back allowing for more space to appear on the wings and in the "hole".

Football really is that easy.

Its honestly football 101.

Cheers fam! Had no idea that was happening. I'm just sitting her like wtf is going on out there...

Lukaku
Lennon Barkley Mirallas
Besic McCarthy
Baines Stones Mori Coleman
Howard

I'd go with that team and concentrate on making us hard to beat. We're always going to get goals down the other end with Lukaku.

I think Barry's had a brilliant season from a personal point of view but I'd like to see us with a bit more energy in that position that Besic would provide.

Serious post this time.

The thing is, people are saying that the current football that we play is the best we've played in decades.

Totally disagree - a Martinez side has certainly played the best football, but it isn't this one, it's the one from his first season. Not only could they rampage forwards (3-0 at home to Arsenal being the highpoint) but defend, too. 'Total' performances. Inherited defensive strength and an unleashed forward line. Best of both worlds.

My major contention with Martinez is that despite his platitudes, his major failing is that he fails to appreciate that which has has inherited. Does he overcredit himself for the first season? Maybe. Has he failed to improve the senior players already here when he arrived - again, maybe - not many of them have become better players. I can see why people get angry with the Wigan comparisons, but had he worked and maintained the solidity he inherited while then improving the attack, we would not have had the last 18 months, in the way Wigan wouldn't have nose dived. If I have the materials for a very solid one bedroom house, which I can improve year on year, why build a posey three-floor gaff that blows over in the wind? That's my contention with his Wigan side; tried to over-complicate it with players who couldn't do it, to the detriment of the club in the long term. No point in your hedge fund having a bumper bonuses year if it goes bust the next year, ask Glenncore.

Genuinely, I think the Stoke result and performance was so farcical (to score 3 goals and lose) might be the breaking point. It's become self-parody. It would be massively Everton (and a de facto step in the right direction) if we beat Spurs 2-0. He's got the personnel to play a tight game, he's got the time to - let's see if he has the will.

Who would start in a tighter Everton XI?

Think they've got a lot more organisation defensively too, across the team.

You can really see in how they play that Pochettino has stamped his authority on the team in terms of their pressing as well.

Yeah, which wasn't particularly a spurs trait previously. I don't mind spuds- they've usually ( like us ) provided a string of England talent, too.

Could be a cracker!

I like this team. Not entirely sure about Lukaku in goal, but has to be worth a try.

Don't worry Davey Moyes will be along soon and rescue you. Please Mr Moyes can I have some more of your trophy winning football.

Sure 11 years, but we were like a modern day Sunderland or Villa when Moyes picked us up. The average resulting league position speaks for itself, Martinez is below that (albeit football in his first season great to watch).

Admittedly, I'm a huge Moyes fan and the booing on his return to GP was a disgrace. His record at utd with the cash he had vs LVG was decent, too.

But this is a Martinez thread: what would be the extent of your support for him... 2-3 seasons at the current rate?

I think you made a point earlier about him still being a relatively young manager ( true ), with emerging squad ( true ), what should non Martinez believers be looking out for. I have to say a cup would forgive in awful lot, even though I don't think he's tactically that brill.

Wont go into the Moyes league positions/winning trophies. When he left I applauded and gave him the send off that was befitting the service he did for our club. I thanked him but was glad he left. I never booed him on his return neither. As far as his record at Manu is concerned - so what you'll have to ask Manu fans about that.

I'll leave it at the 'Non Martinez believers'. Everton for the Cup.
