Roberto Martinez discussion

his inability of organizing a team defensively seems like is going to be his Achilles heel for his whole career. Don't see us winning much when no one knows their duties when we don't have the ball.

I wouldn't dismiss Pulis so quickly. He understands defending as a team and he can achieve relative success with very modest resources.

His team has never been relegated - which is amazing when you look at the Crystal Palace team he took over. In fact, he took Palace to 11th place and was voted Manager of the Year.

That doesn't mean that his teams are attractive to watch, but he does get the best out of his squads.

I agree Pulis is good at what he does. He seems to be the man for saving teams from relegation. But for me what's telling about Pulis and his style, was his time at Stoke after they were established in the PL (safe from yearly relegation scraps). At that time, Stoke were outspending Everton, but despite the cash Pulis couldn't deliver anything beyond combative teams with great defensive shape, etc. That's why he was asked to leave. In short, he couldn't master the art of scoring goals in the PL. He never has done.
I know the current fashion is to bash Martinez for not getting more out of the squad (a squad mainly assembly by him, so that argument is a bit uncharitable), but I think he deserves credit (alongside some merited criticism) for the ease with which we score goals and create chances. After many seasons of Moyes'side struggling to score goals it's a significant change and one way that we have actually progressed since the turgid football of last year.

He never settled at Everton, but Antolin Alcaraz was good enough to get a winner's medal at Wembley.

Playing in front of Robles, he successfully marshalled a makeshift back three with two novice wingbacks against the talent of Tevez, Aguero, Silva, Yaya Toure...

He was also part of a defence that got relegated because he/they couldn't keep clean sheets.........

I get your point but im sure he was injury prone, 30 years of age and slow. At first I thought he may of been a decent addition but that soon disappeared. Same with Kone too but that has changed a little - still not great but I will give kone a chance if Martinez plays him up top with Lukaku and not as a make shift left winger.

Tongue in cheek? Sorry, am I to understand that only losing twice in 12 games is a matter of grave concern?

I think you took the wrong turn mate, the Nou Camp is that way------------------------>

Literally nearly butted my computer desk in disbelief ! Nou camp ? Sorry mate but its Martinez who is dying to play the Barcelona way - AND FAILING. It does not work, we have no messi, iniesta, suarez, Sergio busquets, pique etc etc....

You say 2 defeats in 12 ? How many of those are wins ? How many games should we have won ? Beaten at home to stoke, Leicester, draw away to Bournemouth after being 2-0 up and 3-2 with minutes to go ?

Sorry mate but your running out of excuses now, you once said lets see were we are at Christmas to prove the doubters wrong - guess what ? We are not picking up results on a consistent basis, we are 11th in the league and slowly falling, before you say we are a few points of the top 6 we are also a few points about Chelsea who are having a horrific season. For me he must beat City at home at least, heavy defeat to City or a shock at Dagenham could be a massive turning point.

This I lay firmly at Martinez's feet mate, there's no way a goalkeeper dictates how his defenders mark at a set piecies. Daves talking through his orange peel looking for a scapegoat, I like to think I'm more even handed.

Howard may have input on things like markers at the front and back post but he's not setting the defensive line up in front of him.

You see Dougie that is were your wrong. According to Osman (im saying this based on what I've been told by multiple people) in his book, Martinez doesn't practice set pieces, if this is true then this alone should have the manager sacked, in the game these days I think everything should be covered, there is the resources to do so. With that being said I still think a keeper and the centre half's should still organise the set pieces, based on what they have practiced midweek - or not if ozzy is to be believed.

Just read an article with Martinez in Four Four Two, where he says that getting into the Champions League is more important than winning a trophy, in order for us to keep the good players we have. I'm not sure I can whole heartedly agree with that. While Champions League is important, when a player looks back on their career, surely they want to say; "look at my medals!", not "I qualified for the Champions League once!".

Don't get me wrong, I understand the money that the Champions League brings and there is a prestige to playing in it. But for me winning a trophy, should be just as important and looking at our season now, we are too far adrift to qualify for the Champions League. But we are in the semi final of the League Cup, our priority should be to win the League Cup or the FA cup. We have probably one of the largest squads we have had in decades, so there should be no excuses.

In the semi final of a cup and some people still choosing to bash the manager.

@Paul Bernard stating @davek is "running out of excuses" just sums up some peoples total negativity. Now we need to beat Man City (the team owned by a multi billionaire--basically a country) or heads may roll i guess... haha, astonishing.

ironically those negative posters would prefer to watch negative football which to me just seems bizarre.

Let the manager build his squad and enjoy the football in the meantime!!!
