Roberto Martinez discussion

Last season was wonderful, we scored some superb goals.

But in a way that video is encouraging - we have much the same squad just with Eto'o/Besic instead of Deulofeu so it should be a lot easier to recreate something we've done before than produce it in the first place.

But anno domini seems to have caught up with half the first team regulars.

And Bobby seems stuck in a tactical rut....he hasn't evolved since last season.

Agree that age hasn't been kind to some but in theory it should benefit others like Barkley, Lukaku and Stones.

Not sure about the tactical rut - in the past 4 games we used counterattacking against Wolfsburg and for City we set out as more a 4411. One worked and the other didn't but we have 't always used the 4231 possession football approach.

But I have been drinking so that could account for my happy frame of mind;)

We used the counter attacking last season as well, Links......and with great effect against notably Arsenal and Man. United.

And as you say, it was great against Wolfsburg.

That aspect of our game doesn't worry me.

It is when we are doing the pressing that I feel he is a rabbit in the headlights.

This bollox that when they probe around the opposition box for minutes on end and there are no gaps so the ball then starts a backward journey and ends up deep in our half...inviting trouble with our Dad's Army defence.

Just bang it in the middle and see what happens.

For me, the most depressing goal we have conceded this season was the second one at Spurs.

They were halfway through added time at the end of the first half and Seamus had the ball on the edge of the Spurs box.

There were no gaps so he passed it back....and it went back again....and again...until it was deep in our half and it was passed forward to Barry.

And we know what happened next :(

I just think sometimes it has become football by numbers......and the blooming script needs to be torn up at times and let the players do the unexpected.

You know what.....happen I will join you in having a drink......:)

Shocking revelation that members of our squad are spending their nights at the theatre instead of getting their rest.

Think G.Neville got it spot on in MNF last night when talking about us. Showing clips of last season compared to this season.

All to many times the ball is going back to the defence, whereas last season we went forward with purpose.

Bit of confidence and tweaking is needed!

We have one of the best squads we have ever had, I am sure it is a confidence thing.

We need all of our star performers fit at the same time and we will have a hell of a side.

My last take on Martinez, is that anybody calling for his head after his first real blip is a lunatic and has lost their grip and reality on football. You don't sack a manager after their first bad run of results. Otherwise you end up with a complete circus on your hands.

Bobby is a class act and we will come good again.

If Neville is seeing this and highlighting it, what is Roberto seeing I wonder. After all surely it is his tactics and game plan.

Fifteen games gone - six points from the drop zone - it rather and regrettably accurately reflects the mean average of how we've played.
Teams have sussed us out - and are pressing our back four high up the field - which will/should matter less when Stones arrives back to do a little more than Jags and Buzz manage - but for the moment is a problem.
Romelu is not a hold-up centre-forward - he's a channel runner - his whole game based on "I bet you don't fancy tackling me at speed."
So it's imperative to play through midfield... so the players with the best first-touch (like not Rom!) are the key to all this... Ozzy (slowing) Sam (legs?) and a rather low on confidence it appears to me, Ross.
Peanuts begins to look a bit played out - and I wouldn't be unhappy to see Oviedo baby claim the place in front of Leighton.
And we DO miss Naismith and his joining up the dots play.
Gibson (awaits abuse and fume for saying this) has no useful place in this set-up and if he was fit I'd flog him - but who'd buy him?
We need more confident cover between the sticks (he will surely play Robles on Thursday) and the positives are Besic and Kev at the moment...
With all this serialised crap about how L'pool need to get/farm the best out of a fading Stevie gee - shouldn't the same theory be being applied to Garry Barry? He is still a key player for us, but maybe needs to have his workload eased a tad
