From what I know, he didnt rape the girl, it was consensual but she was underage.

A documentary came out saying he was all set to go to trial but back in the day all the judges and police wanted a bit of fame and sold the story etc. He did a few days in prison before being released on bail. Then he fled the country.

The girl in question later forgave him, went into hiding because he hated talking about it all the time, said she "loved" him and dropped the charges but the warrant is still out because he left the country.

Ever since then he's worked in Europe, won the academy award for best director for The Pianist a few years back, and popped up in a few movies, most notably Rush Hour 3.

Not condoning what he did, but that's the story anyway.

Yeah but he was incredibly persuasive, and it's actually called Statutory Rape if it's under the age of consent, consensual or not.

She wanted the charges dropped last year (charges which he admitted to) just so her family didn't have to deal with the publicity. Which is fair enough but doesn't change that he commited a terrible crime and deserves to go to jail.

There was once a bad kiddy fiddler who used to stay nearby when in town. I, like all my friends would have crippled him for life given the chance, everyone knew what he was up to but nothing was ever pinned on him. It crept me out that a weirdo like him could get away with molesting children and nothing was ever done. Anyway, he died recently and rather than celebrating his death, millions of people worldwide mourned his loss and he received a massive state funeral.

I guess what the public are trying to say is when you are a wealthy public figure with a few mental issues it's okay to have sex with children, it's justified by the fact you had a tough time growing up, regardless of the law and morality or how much it affects the children involved.

Yeah, there's no extenuating circumstances here. If he wasn't famous, just some anonymous guy, no-one would think twice about condemning him. he should be extradited and face trial - just like anyone else would.

And to clarify: statute of limitations does not apply here. Why? Because he was charged at the time - statute of limitations sets time limits in which to bring charges, once charged within the time limit that statute no longer applies.
