Romelu Lukaku

...and he wont want to go into next summer's WC with a new club to find then.

We are entering crunch time here with this. Lukaku wants out now and I doubt it will be stopped.

Sorry Dave, Lukaku has not said anywhere as far as I recall "I want to go now". He's simply said he wants CL football and he won't sign a new contract. Absolutely no reason to sell him unless it suits Everton. I'd be pretty confident he'll be banging them in for us next season.

Even if by some miracle against the odds we qualify next season we'll still have to sell him that summer as he'll only have 1 year left on his deal, and as Liverpool, Spurs (pre Pochettino) and Leicester have proven a 1 off season in the CL does little to attract CL players, Leicester lost Kante to Chelsea who didn't even have European football this season.

We need to build for the future, signings like Schnerderlin and Gueye who believe in what we want to achieve. I literally see no benefit of keeping Rom next season if he doesn't want to be here/sign a new contract. More to lose than gain imo

i'd happily see him leave on a free if he won us the FA Cup/Europa League in the 2018/19 season instead of selling him for £50m.

The feller has been our best signing for 30 years. It was doubted how wise that money was being spent at the time.

Thank goodness those in charge gambled on it as it's paid off handsomely.
I'm usually awful at predicting how well a player will do android his worth. But i recall running down the stairs and around the lounge as if we'd scored a late winner when we got him on loan. I seriously could not believe it. Up there with when we signed kanchelskis for me

But it's for 1 season and CL targets still turn you down for the big names. What did Liverpool achieve finishing 2nd under Rodgers? Still lost Suarez and couldn't bring Sanchez in who went for Arsenal.

What did Spurs achieve pre Pochettino? Still lost the likes of Bale, Modric and couldn't attract the very best to stay in the top 4 places.

Leicester- Lost Kante, brought inplayers like Musa and Mendy need I say more?

This notion that 1, ONE top 4 finish can set us up for the big time is utterly deluded and it's why I laugh when people opt on those polls for a top 4 finish over a cup win.

We quality for the CL next season, Rom will still leave but for £40 million and not £80-90 million with having only 1 year left on his deal, we still bring in good players but the very best still go to your Man city's, Chelseas, Utds on 200k+ a week deals and they finish above us and knock us out the top 4 places the following season.

The reality is unless your bankrolled by an oligarch or sheikh season in season out a 1 off CL qualification does diddly squat for a club.

Every part of your posts relate to the very term the club is trying its best to eradicate.... SMALL TIME.
Mindsets have to change , if you want to swim with the Big Fish you have to be a Big Fish. Some on here had the same mentality over Stones sale wanting us to cut and run a year earlier for 20/25 mil. That at a time Sterling went for 50 mil.
Utd shelled out near 90 mil for Pogba . Now ask yourself whats Rom worth.
His age & his goalscoring record dictates he's the hottest property in world football at the moment. I for one can see him even better in 2/3 years time.
You want this club back at the top ? Stop thinking small time , we have a player that if he stayed with the right additions to the squad we will be challenging for the league.
So if someone wants him they have to pay Real Top Dollar....thats what Big Clubs do.

He wont be boss if he's disgruntled will he? The whole atmosphere around him will be poison.

Cut the Gordian knot and have done with it.

If he's "disgruntled" and non-productive his suitors will take a different view of him. He has no choice but to keep playing to his best. He wants CL...he either gets that by banging in goals for us to get us there, or impressing his suitors even more so they make a bid. He needs to cement his place in El Bobs Belgian side for the World Cup. He simply isn't going to down tools or drop his performances.

But it's not a guarantee we'll win either of those just because we have Rom. We had Rom this season yet still got knocked out the cups early doors.

It's not a question of having Lukaku makes us stronger, but if he doesn't want to be here why throw £40 odd million down the drain that could get us a Lacazette type player to keep him for 1 season in which he might play well, down tools, etc I just don't see the benefit.

The only argument I hear for doing so is we COULD win the title next season or we COULD finish 4th or we COULD win the EL. Well we could do either of those without Rom heck we finished 4th with Marcus Bent and not Rooney. I COULD marry Katy Perry one day but I'm not staying single holding out for it.

Mario Gomez is 32... he's got 9'years on Lukaku so I'd expect him to have achieved more. How was his record at 23 years of age? I honestly don't know but I'd be surprised if it was better than Roms record at 23.

mate, ronaldo, messi and ibrahimovic didn't have as good a record as rom at 23, never mind mario gomez.

yeah i know, i wasn't really disagreeing with anything you said, just wanted to point out it's just money at the end of the day. We'd remember the success a lot more than the sale.

I'm just arguing my point that if you add up the pros and cons it adds up that yes we should demand a near record fee of £80-85 million and if someone pays great if not atleast you can put the case to Rom that we wanted a realistic fee and we never got that. £100 million going from 70 to 80 to now that just looks like a war between him and his agent and as I demonstrated I see no benefit to having a half arsed Rom next season, even a on it Rom next season I wouldn't sacrifice £30-40 million for as it does nothing for us when we have to sell him the following season for relative peanuts.

Our best chance of the top 4 next season is going into the season in high spirits, with a squad all pulling in the same direction after having (hopefully) spent £100 million+ on decent players- not this sideshow saga with Rom and his agent.

Pogba has offered United nothing all season....he cost £89M. He was cast aside by one of the very best managers of all time, SAF, who seemingly didn't see him suiting the EPL. Lukaku is ultra consistent, and has the most valuable of commodities...goals, goals, goals. On that basis alone he's worth a minimum of £100M. Transfer prices will continue to rocket over the next few seasons. There's no way at all we should feel we wouldn't get that figure or more for him.

Raul Moat has more chance of managing in a World Cup final than Martinez.

you're saying a man who has been dead for 7 years has more chance of managing in a world cup final than an actual football manager who is not only currently a manager of an international team, but also manager of possibly the most talented squad in international football. I disgaree.

Boy am I glad you dont sit on the clubs board .
Stop trying to sell him because something may or may not alter his price in 12 months.
How about we buy some Top Draw players to work with him and have a real go at smashing the top 4.

At this moment tho if anyone wants to & he wants to go the club have priced him at what he's worth . No problems at all with that.
