Romelu Lukaku

His 'pointless' goals killed off teams rendering them with an extremely small chance of making comebacks.

No goal is worthless.
I don't disagree at all. That's why I put it in quotation marks.

Goals against lesser sides will likely be the difference between United scraping into the Champions League last season, and comfortably qualifying through their final league position this time around.

I think that they'll need an upgrade if they ever want to be actual champions again, though.

Morata missed a great chance to equalise against West Ham today. He also spurned an easy one to win against Atletico meaning they finished second in their group and now have a strong chance of drawing PSG or Barcelona. If this was Lukaku he’d have been destroyed in the media.

His stats will always be fine, by and large. The issue is his level of performance in difficult games, such as at Anfield, Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford last season, where I've never seen a player so deathly afraid of an opponent as he was of Lovren, Rojo and Luiz. Leave a foot in early doors and he doesn't want to know, because he's a massive fart.

All that aside, I just generally don't like players that look awkward and unnatural in possession; and so I've reached a point where if people genuinely feel as though they're watching a world class footballer in action, I say good luck to them.
Agree with the first point - Lukaku clearly sees himself as a student of the game, and tbf he does come across as a thoughtful bloke who thinks hard about improving his football. But there's a time for thoughts, and there's a time for deeds. His performances against Lovren in particular were embarrassing for someone who aspires to world class performance. Just mentally nowhere near the level he wants to be at.

Second point, though, I guess there are different types of possesion. Because Rom in full flow bearing down on goal is the epitome of fluid, natural football. That goal against City last year where he flayed Clichy? I kindly doubt you thought that looked awkward and unnatural. It was the type of blatant mismatch you rarely see in premiership football - like the schoolmaster joining in with the kids for a kickaround.

Oh, he absolutely had his moments. Even against the better sides, I always fancied him to simply barge past the likes of Clichy and Monreal - basically the types that don't have much physicality to their game. There was the strange anomaly of Daley Blind, though. I think Lukaku must have been his favourite opponent.

I don't think I'd have ever had a problem with him if he was treated like any other player, but I wasn't having that a lad who struggles with the fundamentals was too good for Everton and would be playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona one day.

They're in a catch 22 now. They really should take Lukaku off for Ibrahimovic so they have an actual footballer up front as an outball for the second half, but the problem is he's such a lethal goalscorer that you could be taking off a goal or two.

I think Mourinho is going to park the bus for the second half too so he'll keep Lukaku on and hope he sniffs out a goal, but again... is this really what a 'top club' should be aiming for? The likelihood is that Lukaku could grab one but they're playing a top club and will probably lose 5-2 in the process.

For me, Ibrahimovic would be on and I'd be treating it as a home game and not giving City ridiculous respect. Even if they nicked this 2-1, Jose is sending the message to his squad that they're rubbish and he doesn't trust them to win a game at home; how do you win titles with that mindset?

They'll probably leave him on like they did when they went to the Emirates and he played a big role in two of the three goals they scored with him up top.
