Romelu Lukaku

I’m really happy with Lukaku and reckon most fans are but unfortunately on Saturday he was the lightning rod for our performances in the past few games. He has been too isolated and feeding on scraps but that’s not his fault.

Fans didn’t turn on him. It’s a small issue. Rom hasn’t scored but he assisted 2 in 2 games now. Mourinho clearly loves him. Wish Zlatan comes quickly so that we can rotate him more keeping him fresher

Good to hear this set straight by actual United fans.

Between them, Rooney and Niasse have scored the same amount of goals as Lukaku had after 10 games last season.

Everton's problems run much deeper.

Like we can't score goals, and don't look like scoring anytime soon.

Also, 2 players scoring (and those 2 players are the only players to have scored in our paltry 7 goals return in the league this season. We had scored 15 goals after the first 10 games last season, and had 6 different goalscorer's) the same amount as Lukaku did after 10 games is hardly spreading the goals round the team mate.

But it suggests we miss Barkley then really doesn't it, rather than Lukaku.

I think we could have coped with losing one or the other, but not both.

We're missing Barkley big time mate.

The point I was replying to Tubey was that 2 players scoring our only goals to date in the prem this season is hardly spreading the goals around.

Aye, but simultaneously I think it's valid to say that it's not really missing Lukaku that is the issue, as the players who are in the same role are getting the same goal return.

The missing bit of the puzzle is the playmaker who actually spread the play that allowed us to score goals more evenly early on last season - and that's Barkley.

We basically agree. Weirdly, I don't think Lukaku would have made much of a difference to us the way we've been playing, except he's a physical threat that terrified defenders so it would have put poorer sides on the backfoot. So we'd probably be 3-4 points better off.

As @Tubey has said, it was more a response to the endless snide remarks being levelled at those of us who didn't like Lukaku. He was here during last season's dismal run of something like one win in 13, as well as the preceding Martinez disasters, so all I'm saying is that the situation wouldn't necessarily be any better.

I do have hope that Barkley can help turn this around, though.

We can't defend anymore. Not saying we don't need to score more goals but we were, by and large, meaner in defence.

Urgh, we're a mess.

It's pretty easy to see how the idea that we miss Barkley and Lukaku equal amounts could be useful in playing down the idea that Lukaku hasn't been that huge a loss, but the truth of the matter is that Lukaku scored goals whether or not Barkley was playing all through his 4 years here. He'd probably score 20 goals at Huddersfield as long as they played halfway to his strengths, as all you have to do is give him the ball in the 18 yard box and he'll still score a handful out of nothing, beyond that. You're pretty much guaranteed a base of 20 goals in all comps with him. Higher quality players around him will merely push his tally beyond that, with a diminishing return.

Barkley is a pretty poor finisher and certainly wouldn't have replaced Lukaku's goals and would have had no one decent to create for. Something he isn't exactly world class at either (especially where Lukaku was concerned). I really doubt he'd have made an earth-shattering difference over any decent stretch in these opening ten games.

We've definitely missed his pace and driving running though. Sigurdsson, Klaassen, Rooney etc don't have that ability at all.

Definitely glad he’s gone.

This came up in my Facebook feed from 2 years ago. Yeah, defo don't miss this.
