The days of getting the likes of Jeffers back are over, will end his career at Southampton

I hope Sarri benches him when Chelsea play us at Goodison, or it'll be like that Newcastle match when Speed had just joined them and got booed every time he went near the ball.

Was too young to remember that but looking back it was a shame. Speed and Barkley's departures were nothing alike, Gary was exasperated by the state of the club and Kendall struggling with the drink whereas Ross forced his way out for a bigger wage after being shown more love and patience than anybody (and scammed the club out of millions deliberately as he did so).

Speed was a better player, a far better man and, because of the fact he refused to slag the club publicly or reveal publicly what were obviously some very dark secrets, a far better Evertonian.

I think the reason why Speed got a hostile reception was because no-one really knew why he left at the time. It was painful to watch though. I felt sorry for him. IIRC this was also during the Johnson era, so the atmosphere at Goodison was toxic to begin with.

People knew, he just kept his mouth shut like a good Evertonian.
