Dave we’ve had our fair share of phoneys but Baines isnt one of them.
Name me a better left back we’ve had since the 80s who’s been better?
I've done that on multiple occasions in the Baines thread in the last week or so. It all comes down to not being able to defend, but having the job description of 'defender' that's at the heart of that particular matter.

But I say again: imagine you won 2 titles, an FA Cup, a ECWC and you're currently doing ok but not great, and then you see a player given the unwarranted (and laughable) title of 'legend', who's won the square root of f.a. and has clawed in almost £40M in wages by playing for a club that you brought great honour to?

Personally I'd be livid.

Baines was good enough to be in a successful team unfortunately the players around him were not. As for what he earns it’s irrelevant in modern day football, bloody hell we have millionaires before we even know their names and have played about half of season of top flight football.

...if he was that good he'd have found a team that could get him silverware. He wasn't. The only real offer of a move came from Moyes - and we all know what happened there.

He was bang average without Pienaar. That's the top and bottom of it. Any elite club back then would have laughed at the idea that they had to have a forward player covering for their full back just so he could get a few crosses in. That's why they gave him a wide berth.

Baines being thought of as anything more than bang average is a symptom of having a fanbase that dont know what a successful team looks like. Thankfully I got to see the 80s team and so I know how far off the pace the likes of Baines are. Players like him are fakes. They might fool the gullible, but I've seen the real deal and he's not it.

I agree he had his limitations defensively but as an attacking full back he was fantastic at times and his link up play with Pienaar almost unplayable against. You must agree that he offered a great deal to the team in the final third? I don't really rate that Alexander-Arnold as a defender but he can be devastating at times going forward and he's won a European Cup and (probably) a league title.

There's more to Alexander-Arnold than Baines. He has more aggression and self belief and ambition. Compare that with Baines at the height of his playing powers who said he didn't fancy staying away from home when faced with the chance of going to an international tournament.

The feller was limited and had a miserable losing attitude.

By miserable losing attitude you mean one of the first prem footballers to talk openly about confidence issues and promote mental health awareness in the sport? That is a positive impact that transcends the game - something not many footballers can lay claim to.

That's before we start on his exceptional ability as an attacking LB and leadership of Everton FC - decisively stepping up to sack Roberto Wormtongue when the club was paralysed with indecision. Took matters into his own hands and represented the fanbase.

Limited. LOL.
